As my long power loss project continues, and seemingly, the problem has been found, I am always looking for anything that can be useful to the community. As we know, a vacuum pump is more or less required for the brakes to prevent loss of brakes when the vacuum from the engine is lost.

Is this vacuum pump strong enough for our needs??? if so, the cost isn't bad.

12 VDC 11" HG VACUUM PUMP
item number: 4-1831
PRICE: $18.95

Thanks for any info

Make a reservoir - 3 feet or so of 4" PVC capped and strap it to the frame behind the bumper. That's worth two or three stops by itself. Hook the pump to it and then see how long itruns before it shuts off. Report back.

DOS Tip: Use check valve so that a catastrophic failure of pump or reservoir doesnt leave you brakeless.

I wonder if it has an automatic shutoff...might have been turned on and off by the ECM in the vehicle and so might require some control method beyond an on/off switch. Unless you automatically turn it on when you head down the mountain! Laughing

At any rate, shipping to my zip almost doubles the price, but now I know another vehicle to look for in the boneyard Smile

Nice thought, and it might be worth a try, but that is the pump that EPA required be put in to detect if the gas cap had been left open. That way, when the system does not stay sucked down and you are emitting as much hydrocarbon as a fur tree, the ECM can take time from doing the important jobs to set the MIL and a code for the dealer to bill you for.

Then it prolly lacks sufficient capacity to be a good brake booster pump.

At 0.35amps, I'm sure it does not have the capacity (volume) to keep up with the brake booster requirements. That's only 4 watts of power, so I'm thinking it would take several minutes to recover after each brake application.

Also, 11" of vacuum is very low for the booster. My engine will hit double that coming off throttle when I hit the brakes, so thats only 1/2 the "power" brakes.
