With some of the recent comments suggesting that the GMCNet is full of Doom and Gloom, I felt the need to comment.

*** This is mainly addressed to our visitors and newbies.

DO NOT look at the negative experiences as Doom and Gloom. Look at them as a lesson to be learned in the TZE school of preventative maintenance.

I personally frequent here with the main purpose of reading about the problems others have experienced. It helps me better understand where I might experience a problem, and more importantly, how I might minimize or eliminate that problem from occurring on my own coach.

Those who feel there is too much Doom and Gloom are missing the most valuable point of this group. That is to share both good and bad with others with the intention of helping rather than discouraging them. Help is a quality that the GMCNet excels at doing.

The objective of travelling with an RV is to have a trouble free and enjoyable trip. You likely won't have as much success if you blissfully run down the road unaware of your RVs weak points. Overly obsessing about potential problems can also temper your vacation travels, so finding a happy balance between the two is generally best.

We can't prevent all problems from occurring, but being aware and informed helps us to minimize the effects of those problems and quickly get back to enjoying our travels.

There is an old saying "Sh-* happens". It happens with GMCs, it happens with brand new diesel pushers, it happens with dishwashers, it happens with everything. "it happens".

Attached is a quote from a member of another forum I watch. " We've had MULTIPLE problems with our new 2018 coach... It's actually spent more time back at the dealership, than in our driveway.. We are thinking that maybe we got a lemon.. We are very disheartened.. We STILL don't have the manual to this new unit and have been asking for them since March!! ... ANYWAY.. Back to my story...

Since we've been having so many problems, we decided to run the washer and dryer on a recent trip, just to make sure they worked ... Well, you could hear them banging and clanging from several campsites away... I have never heard such racket!! We thought that maybe it was because we did a load of towels.. So I put in a smaller load and they just about shimmied out of the cupboard!! One of the stops on our trip was to visit my cousins... We mentioned it to them in conversation, since they own an appliance store.. And they both laughed and said that they were sure the packing was still in the machines to cause such noise...... Well, as soon as we returned we hauled the D back to the dealership, for this and a multitude of other problems and GUESS WHAT??? Yup.. The packing was still inside both the washer and dryer!! Is anyone else's washer and dryer making this kind of sound??? Might want to have them check for packing!!

Our gas tank is also leaking on the driveway... Has anyone else had this problem????
"

Note this was a 2018 model. New coaches from every manufacturer are notorious for quality issues.

We have an older Fleetwood Discovery diesel pusher. S..t happens to it also. In the past two years since we've owned it, we had problems with the jack system, washer/dryer, roof air, multiple zone thermostat, slide out motor lockup. If I had taken this to dealers for repairs we'd probably be out 20K+ but I was able to repair/replace/improve everything myself. I've got friends in the community that don't know which end of a screwdriver to hit the nail with. They take the to coach to a dealer for everything and, sad to say, the dealers frequently see them coming and rip them off imo.

The advantage of owning a GMC is this group and the enormous technical knowledge base it contains. Anyone willing to get their hands dirty can do most repairs. Those who come into the group with rose colored glasses expecting to take their 40 year old classic they bought for $4000, hop in it, and drive it trouble free are in for a rude awakening. Fact of life.

The GMC compares very favorably to other motorhomes in terms of issues but is much more repairable and his this group...a HUGE positive. If (when) my pusher decides to have a major problem it's going to cost me a LOT of money and I have an extended warranty just in case. It costs a lot of money too.

We have traveled almost 300,000 miles in our 77. It has never been towed, and the only time it has been stopped alongside the road was for flat tires. (too many of those... at one time I was on a first name basis with "Big O" dealers all up & down the West Coast!) Of course, almost everything that turns or moves has been replaced at least once BEFORE it failed. After putting new tires on it we'd start off tomorrow for the East Coast, with every expectation of getting back with no problems. It might not make it, but the point, (as others have made better than I) is that as 40 yr old vehicles, repairs & maintenance will be required. I was fortunate to do or be involved in most of the repairs myself with parts that were better quality than what we seem to be getting now. Also very lucky to have had very knowledgeable and generous mentors. This forum provides that mentorship and is very valuable to all of us,

John,
I have observed the way you keep up on the knowledge of your GMC since 1980
and too bad others do not learn to rub elbows with people that understand
parts of the coach and try to understand the importance of being familiar
with the coach.
Whenever I'm at any GMC function, I'm right there when others are
presenting tech information.
At my age, I am having a hard time remembering all things, but I know
people I can rely on to help me.
I'm getting ready to head out to Elkhart, IN soon , so We will see if I
make it there without a major break down.
Lot of people say that it is the driver causing the problems, so I will try
to drive it instead of racing it. Wish me luck.

Agree with what all of you have said. We put more than 100k miles on our
GMC from '05 to '15 and loved every minute of it.

Bob and I are holed up near Knoxville, TN in our gasoline powered SOB now.
Discovered one of our inside duallies is flat, so we'll have it repaired
next week. Even well, we'd have to pay to have that done. He easily and
quickly changed flat tires on our and other people's GMCs.

With two slides, we have lots of room, but we were very comfortable in our
GMC. We'd prefer to be in the GMC, but these days Bob is not able to take
the preventive steps it needs at home or make on-the-road repairs like he
used to. Thus, we travel in the SOB and pay the price...

We still love your GMC stories and reliving our GMC memories.

Jim, hope you have a safe, trouble-free trip. Will see you in Elkhart.

Sandra and Bob

Sandra, I am beginning to get a feel for what you & Bob are going through, I feel the day fast approaching when I will not be able to jump up & "get'er done" like I used to. We don't have a plan in place for that problem.

Jim, I have confidence in you, You & Grace will make it no problem!

What were the words to that Archie Campbell song on Hee Haw? "Gloom,
Despair and Agony on Me?"

Here ya go:

Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me

We figured she was rich, loaded to the hilt
And we figured she had class like the Vanderbilts
'Cause we had heard for years how she was so well reared
How was we to know they meant the way she was built

Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me
