Marc,

While we are glad to have you aboard, there is something that you seem to have missed.

Only about half of the followers here use the forum interface. The other half get this as an e-mail list. Most of the e-mail readers are working with limited bandwidth. All of us suffer with limited and expensive bandwidth while we are traveling. We all try to travel a lot. That makes including a picture in a posting very unpopular. There is a means to include images that is easy to use, it is written up at the top of the forum entry page. Those pictures that are important should be posted with an appropriate title in the GMC photo site so that they can be referenced as needed.

We had a writer here that insisted on putting a selfie w/coach in every message. I don't know about the others, but I was forced to use the "Ignore" feature and have used it for him only. I do have broadband when moored at home, but on the road bandwidth is problematic and expensive to use when I can get it. On the backhaul leg of our recent excursion to Shawnee for the Spring Convention, we were two separate days with no usable high speed access available. When one is out of urban areas and away from interstate, this is a common issue.

And, those that get the e-mail never see either Swap Meet or Sandbox.

As said, glad to have you aboard.

Matt

Nice hack, Dutch.

Those of us who do not use the mail list function tend to forget the issue Matt mentions.
Any photo solution needs to address it.

What if just the mail list images were converted to links? Then a user could decide if an image was
important enough to warrant bandwidth usage. Solving a mechanical problem, for example.

Matt seems to feel the GMCPhotos process is simple. I've used it and I don't.
Many photos are useless without a caption, and lots of them don't have captions.
If they were associated with a post, then the context would be obvious.

My feeling is that the GMCNet site should store photos, display them for browser users,
and convert to links for mail list users. The existing GMCPhotos site should be moved to the GMCNet site,
the existing posts scraped for GMCPhotos links and GMCNet site links substituted.

Ideally, the GMCNet site is migrated to GMCMI where members' dues can support its use and development.
The migrated photo archive can be accessed via purchased photo handling software to recreate
the GMCPhotos environment as well.

The above is a huge project, I know, and probably misses some important considerations.
A discussion on a higher level is probably the place to start... Something like -

"What are the desired features of an internet based inter-owner communication environment?"

I'll throw out my list...
- Hosted and supported by an organization with the resources to maintain and develop it.
- Forum based, with sub-forums.
- Curated/Moderated by subject matter experts.
- Robust, bandwidth conservative, mail list functionality.
- Capacity for photo handling.
- Acquisition of GMCNet
- Acquisition and replication of GMCPhotos site.
- No targeted advertising, no harvesting of user data.

your list pretty much covers it.

I think phpBB version 3.0 or is the best forum software out there right now and can handle all that. here is a nice example incorporating user photo albums https://www.silveradosierra.com/
have a look at the gallery link at the top to see the user albums. these photo pages can have a discussion thread one each photo too or just whatever comments folks add to them. this can be controlled by each user or not.

there is also a realtime chat box plug in that can be placed on the front page for anything and could be useful for road emergencies.

this site is helpful to set it all up https://help.forumotion.com/

the next best IMO is Xenforo software but it doesnt seem to have as many features but development support for both of these is the most active that Im aware of out of all the numerous forum software.

I wwould add to that list private subforums that are members only for club business and/or other confidential stuff. and an on the road emergencies subforum would be good to have as well as the realtime chatbox.

Edit to add: scroll down to the bottom of that first site and you can have a look at how the "Switch to mobile site" feature works. that may be fully customizable too to trim it down to bare necessities.
