Curious if anyone has guidance on where to find fittings/connectors for the auxiliary propane lead coming off the tank. The fitting on there now is very small compared to the standard propane fittings I'm used to seeing on grills and other camping accessories I have. I'm headed to Ace to see if there is an adaptor from the small existing fitting (1/4" or 3/8") to the larger modern fittings that fit on standard propane regulators.

I'd like to use up all of the propane that is currently in the tank and then get it recertified. If it passes, I'll clean it up and paint it. If it doesn't, my plan is to replace it with a new tank.

Any advice, warnings, or stories related to this would be much appreciated.

You never have to recertify the GMC propane tanks. They are ASME tanks. You only have to recertify DOT tanks such as those used for bar b que grills or trailers.

Thanks Emery.

I'm a little confused. I've seen other posts stating some have been turned away by propane fillers for having old tanks. Curious if there is a specific tag or label I should point out on the GMC tank that would convince a filler of the ASME certification

Thanks again for the tip!

P.S. I found the fitting I needed was a QCC1 x 1/4 MNPT adapter. This is a standard Quick Connect male to 1/4" male fitting that will allow me to connect my camp stove and pizza oven to the tank outside the RV.

The expertise of the people that do this is never guaranteed. I always stand by and watch as I have also had the tank over filled more than once.

There is a stamped plate welded to the tank. Gently wire brush this and then give it a light coat of paint. The information is never stamped in all that deeply and it is easy to loose after forty years. Point that out that plate and say to the person that refuses to fill it that this what what says that the tanks original certification is still valid. ASTM code certification is much more severe than DOT.

Thanks again for the tip!

Any time J, we are here to help and enjoy doing so.

Found the fitting I was describing in my original post. I may be the only one who had this "issue", but thought I would post anyway. Bought the fitting on Amazon for $12.

This is described as a QCC (Quick Connect) Type 1 x 1/4" MPT.
Available on Amazon: Onlyfire 5042 QCC1 ACME Nut Propane Gas Fitting Adapter with 1/4 Inch Male Pipe Thread , Brass https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K9N43Y6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_gA9.ybQH8RW1R

J, thanks for the information on the fittings...however, you should consider using yellow teflon, it is only teflon approved for propane. white is for water and may leak over time if used on propane. The big box stores carry it.

Really though the only difference between the two is Yellow is thicker. Same material, PTFE.

Theres also pink for large fittings, and Green for oxygen

Actually, the color does not mean that it is a different formula. When a thread seal tape was first introduced, it only came in a single density type (“white Teflon tape“) that was commonly found in large home improvement stores. Later they began making a double density version, which was twice as thick in the same color (unfortunately with the same “white” color). White will not necessarily leak if used on propane. It is just that propane requires a tighter seal. The double density white is the same as the yellow.

Since many state and local codes adopted the use of double density tapes when making connections for natural gas, the use of same color for two different thickness presented a challenge when time came to inspect a job. Thus, a “yellow TEFLON tape” was later introduced for such application.

Since then, ASTM has broadened the specifications for PTFE tape colors:

White Single or double density, should only be usd on NPT threads up to 3/8” in diameter.

Yellow - double density, often labeled as “gas tape”.

Pink - triple density, required on all joints 1/2” or larger.

Green - oil free PTFE tape, required for use on all lines carrying oxygen (medical oxygen or welding oxygen)

Thanks for the lesson, we should bottle knowledge here and sell it by the pint!
I ASSumed it was like pvc/abs/plastic primer and glue...different colors are for unique applications! Thanks Very Happy
