Karen, I don't know how your State parks work. If there's a private RV park which hasn't opened reservations, you might do as we did here. Tony Bennett and I drove up to the place, looked it over, and I booked five sites on the spot and laid the price. One club (Tidewater Crabs) promptly called them and booked five more. Singles started doing so when we posted about it. This park, like many, doesn't take net reservations before the first of the year - I suspect the software can't handle it. However, standing there with money or calling with a credit card was happily accommodated. Give it a try.

Karen, there are numerous private RV parks, Federal Forest Service
Campgrounds, Municipal, City, County, and Utility Company campgrounds
throughout the path of totality. Don't limit yourself to only State Parks.
Those people are state employees. They, for the most part, are unaware of
what day of the month it is, except for payday, which is on or before the
1st.

We'll for sure keep looking. The problem with private parks is most don't allow tents.
But, we'll figure something out, preferably with other GMCers. Just gotta keep looking.

Don't know if we could handle 20 coaches, but 5 or 6 are no problem. It is
just that western Oregon is kinda iffy for weather. Plus, we are going to
be on a Danube river cruise with a bunch of our GMC friends very soon after
that.

Any ideas on BLM or Forest service land, etc? Near totality centerline, and
valley, not mountains.

Any updates on other GMC'er's plans??
time is running out, and now I think I need to figure out something, so I can get plane tickets bought. Just wondering if anybody found some great ideas or locations?

The problem is where. Every hotel and campground that's anywhere near the path sold out long ago.
Oregon Parks claims they're going to open up their 1st-come-1st-served parks to reservations just for this event,
but they've given no indication on when they're going to do that. If the midnight reservation fiasco
of the reservable parks is any indication, if/when they do open it up, they'll be sold out in minutes.
BLM land is a possibility, but given the estimates I'm seeing for attendance, it's gonna be a zoo
pretty much everywhere. We're talking tens to hundreds of thousands of people descending on the
more popular areas. (better make sure your gas tanks are full before you get there...)
With no reservations, it's pretty much a crap shoot, and you could easily find yourself in an area
with nowhere to legally camp. (I already pity law enforcement and first responders...)
Unless somebody knows of private land where we could camp, and then maybe shuttle to the totality path if necessary
(though that itself could prove difficult given the crowds), any kind of group gathering is going to be pretty much impossible.
just my .02.

There is private land that is renting out spaces, today, I'm hoping for BLM
land, but I need to get moving on that.
But I've had my coach less that a week, I'm busy!

So, I've been talking with some friends, and looking around in Google Earth, and we are thinking that someplace near Mitchel Oregon is about right. Just a few miles from the center line of the eclipse, BLM land for dispersed camping, should have good weather. It's 75 miles out Highway 26 from Madras.
Thoughts?

Looking to be a non-gmc eclipse event for me. I just seen a southwest airline sale, and hope to have my tickets bought before nightfall tonight.
As for Oregon, since things are crazy out there, it looks like we will hope for good weather and i will either be around albany, or might have an opportunity to be up at black butte ranch for the eclipse.
After the eclipse, the plan is to camp the tues- sat down at baker bay campground on dorena lake outside of cottage grove, oregon. So if anybody is in the area, it is a super place to stop by if you are traveling bsck south to california.

I hate to announce this, but, as President of the GMC CASCADERS, it is in
my best interest to support my club to the best of my abilities. Will and
Janice Powers from the Columbia Gorge Area are in the process of planning
a "Totality Awesome" rally. Location is yet to be determined, but plans are
underway. We will have details up on the Web site at gmc cascaders.com
before too long. Hotels in the area have gone completely ape $!#$ in the
price gouging department, some as high as $600.00 per night. Every
campground that is privately owned has done similar stunts. The State owned
campsites that are available for reservations are all booked up. There will
be a few more available on Wednesday (tomorrow) by calling the Oregon
State Parks reservation number after 8:00 A.M. PDT. Good luck with that.
That leaves Federal Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers, County Parks, Cities, and Utility Companies like
Portland General Electric and others with campgrounds to rent. Tens of
thousands of people have flooded the reservation hotlines with requests
for spaces. As Jim K might say, "Rots'a Ruck" finding something. If I had
an 80 acre field with a clear view of the sky, I might just put up a
temporary soundstage, a few Porta potties, hire some rock bands and have
"Woodstock West II. If you build it, they will come.
