Crud. Most of us won't be here for the next one. The effect of the "shadow
upon the land" won't be lost, and that is special in its own way. Sorry.

We had quite thick cloud cover in the path of totality just south of Nebraska City, NE but clouds thinned enough at totality for a very good view of the corona and what I guess are streams of plasma or something else.

Karen, were you in the Madras/Prineville area with the other 29,999 people
who came for the event? Just watched the noon news, they had pictures of
the traffic. Fierce. They have never had that big of a crowd, ever. Travel
time from Salem to Portland, which is about 50 miles, is estimated to be
139 minutes. Bumper to bumper from 20 miles south of Salem to Portland.
Glad I'm here in my shop, working on a GMC.

I saw it at the 80% coverage that was the most it achieved, looking up
(through a filter) from poking my head in a traffic signal cabinet at the
Aberdeen Proving Grounds. I thought I was going to miss even that quick
opportunity--I had to wait two hours in line to get on base, and then was
told (incorrectly, but I didn't argue) that my DOT government ID was good
enough to have avoided the line in the first place. It was a nice antidote
to that dose of Big Fat Hairy BS.
Now, if I could just figure out why the intermediate shaft bearing makes
noise when I tighten those hanger bolts on the right side of the block...
Rick "gonna try pressing in the bearing a little tighter--not sure it's
pressed all the way--and then checking the straightness of the hanger"

This was my third full eclipse with several partials thrown in along the way. Having a traveling career in the USAF and DEA sure allowed me opportunities that money couldn't buy. Today the wife and I walked outside and sat by the pool with a cool one in the hand and watched the show. Lenoir City was smack dab in the middle of the path of totality, bright sky with no clouds. I watched the Science channel that was showing it live from Oregon. When it hit totality there, it was then just starting in our sky. My digital thermometer registered 93.5 degrees at start and went down to 86.5 a little past totality. Here in Lenoir City, a great cheer went up at totality, coming from the marina and park on the lake, where ISO glasses were being handed out along with RC Colas and Moon Pies. Fun was had by all.

We lucked out big time and got three sites in the upper campground at Cove Palisades on Lake Billy Chinook, just outside Madras.
Well worth visiting in its own right since the boat ride with family in the canyon was wonderful. The park service kept
things really locked down here, which was a huge blessing. No smoldering fires, no blaring radios, and very quiet
after 10pm. Not leaving until today, and only going to Crater Lake, so shouldn't be too terrible a drive, we hope...
The biggest downside is the huge fires nearby which makes for very smokey sunrises and sunsets, but we're OK here.
Seeing Mt Jefferson (a volcano) to the west completely disappear and then re-appear in sunrise while we were in totality was
unbelievable.

Camped in Cove Palisades a few times. The upper campground is much
preferable to the one down in the canyon. You are correct, the view of the
back side of the cascades is spectacular, particularly at sunrise and
sunset. Rivals the grand Teton's and the Canadian Rockies. Have fun at
Crater Lake.

It was a good gathering. The torch has been passed, Billy Massey gets to scout out a location for the next one. We could probably camp in his yard and drive East ten or twenty iles and be square under it.

I was in Central Oregon with my kids and some friends, near Mitchell, on
BLM land. We got a bit of traffic on the way up, found a nice quiet camp
site, the eclipse was an amazing show. No issues on my first real trip with
the GMC, 1300 miles.

Larry,
We did see it, but not from Ft. Defiance. Mary was driving and didn't see the turn and then the next place to turn around is Missouri. We did get to see the difference in the rivers and it is profound.
We did do a tour of Cairo first, They have flood Murals too, but sad when compared to Paducah. Actually, the entire place is sad. It is clear it was once a thriving settlement and now is all but abandon.
From there we went down to the Museum at New Madrid. That is a small place with a lot of history apart from the biggest known earthquake in North America.
We crossed back to KY on the Dorena-Hickman Ferry (what else would Matt do) and had planned to make camp at a COE on the far side of the land between the lakes, but my phone crashed (again) and then the laptop navigator and so we hold up at a Camp Wally in Fulton KY.
What a great day.
Matt - about to depart the FMCA camp and run for the barn.
