Has anyone converted a home split HVAC system from r22 to one of the replacements, such as HC22a or M099?

I think Matt Colie did a roof AC unit once with some success.

A residential unit would be a really bad idea. Someday a professional will work on it and will contaminate some amount of R-22 (could be a lot) when he tries to reclaim what he thinks is R-22 from the HC charged system.

No, I did not.
What I did do and only with limited success was convert an old 12/120 Nocold to HC12A.

Thanks for the input.

In this case it is a HVAC person giving the option of a new coil and converting to Mo99, a DuPont substitute for r22.

I have just not heard about Mo99 nor much about other substitutes.

Dennis,

Mo99 is an alternative to R-410a that is supposed to be the replacement for R-22. It unfortunately requires opening and cleaning the system. R-410a is extremely expensive and so is facing serious resistance in the domestic market.
Why the new coil(evaporator)?
It is not supposed to require any hardware changes to achieve performance to R-22.

The HCXXX refrigerants are still facing a great deal of political pressure because nobody has a patent and so big money is cut out.

Hi Matt

Thank you. The evaporator coil is leaking, 18 years old, so new as an option versus repair.
And of course their other option is a new 410 system, both outside unit/compressor and new evaporator.

If the leak is in a joint or u bend I would just fix it. I believe you can find r22 on Craigslist or e bay still at an afordible cost. Just as it happened with r12 the original installed refrigerant r22 is the best choice.

Thanks Roy. The actual leak location/source has yet to be determined.
