Who do you guys recommend for a steering box rebuild these days? I borrowed a steering box from Bob Stone because mine had too much play. The borrowed one is better than mine but not great. Now I need to get mine rebuilt and return the borrowed box.
I'm sorry we missed Dothan but plan to go to Branson. We didn't make Dothan due to a water pipe leak. Water was coming up between the hardwood boards! I shut off the water but the source of the leak wasn't obvious. I finally found it but it was too late to go to the rally and the problem had to be fixed. I've got weight on the hardwood bubbles and hope I can get them glued down tight when the wood dries out. In the meantime, I have secured the pipe connection and relocated the water pump so it will be easier to get to it something like this ever happens again.
Thanks,
Tom Whitton

Some of us are seeing that the gear box are not high centered and gives the
illusion that the gear box is defective.
Alex F went over several coaches at Dothan and found them to be off.

My coach has handled well since I got it. Manny looked in the hatch in Patterson last ear, "It's right, don't touch it" so I haven't. I have a new bellows but I'm scairt I'll screw it up installing it.....

Johnny,
Installing a new bellows I don't believe will mess up your steering as long as you mark everything and put it back together lined up exactly the same way.
My steering is a different story... When we had my steering box out of the coach and sitting on the bench, you could feel a little back and forth play in the input shaft. The box we installed had some of the same but not as much. My thinking is play at the steering wheel increases proportionately. A little play in the input shaft on the bench equals proportionately more at the steering wheel because of the increased size of the radius. When you're driving highway speed too much play in the steering wheel keeps you alert, too much so. You can't relax and just enjoy driving. Do you guys agree?
I have lot of respect for Manny. How did he make his determination? If you told him it was handled well, did he decide there was no reason to change anything? When he looked inside the hatch, what did he look at, measure or line up?
All the best,
Tom Whitton

Did I say Manny? I did. Meant Alex Ferrara. Age is catching up with me. Anyway, >ALEX< took a look down the hatch and saw everything the way he wanted to see it, consequently "It's correct". His suggestion - I thought maybe paint spots - was to take a center punch and dot each side of every joint plus the collar alignments. I will screw my courage to the sticking point and do so. After taking a couple of pictures. It will go way easier with the grill out... shades of my old Fiat 128 points change.

You may have to do like I did on the CV joint halves: make a couple of
Dremel cutting wheel marks. My center punches wouldn't mark that hard
stuff.
And while you've got the CV apart, remember my suggestion to cut a plastic
disc, 1/16" or so thick, and force it up into the top splined coupling to
help seal it from water leaking into the CV. RTV or other silicone on top
of that disc, after the clamp is tightened, will add "suspenders" to the
plastic "belt". And use only Valvoline Synpower grease w/MS02 to
lubricate it (and everything else, IMHO).
You may even want to mark a spot on the top half of the CV for a Zerk
fitting so you never feel the need to disassemble it again.

I like the idea of a Zerk fitting... if the thing isn't so hardened alls it does is chew up drill bits. Someplace I have a tub of the same grease, which was mandated for Cessna flap jackscrews. Laced with some sulfate or other which was desirable. It cost three times as much, but Elro paid for it and said 'take it'. He had several full tubs of it.
