Thanks for all that answered. Good to know that it is no real technical
benefit, but probably a social benefit in some areas/situations.

Our GMC will have a long way before we take that into account

Jim,

C'mon Jim that statement is a bit unfair.

One could say the same thing about any of the "upgrades" that anyone makes to their GMC.

What part Rob, the part about the original Imron paint outlasting us?
That's probably true. The other? Ahhh, might have been a bit of a stretch.
(Grin) Mechanical upgrades, while not exactly mission critical, I place
those above cosmetic mods. Just me, though. Everyone's priorities differ.
Although the point about rolling into a classy rv park and having people
look at a GMC with disdainful looks probably means I need to wash my coach
once in a while.

Yeah, I kinda figured that was what you meant. Call it bragging rights or

Jim,

I don't equate "bragging rights" to "one upsmanship;" to me they are completely different and come from different viewpoints.

"Bragging rights" to me are held by someone with a bike, car, motorhome, whatever that he has spent his time and / or his money to
make it the way he wants because that's what he wanted.

One upsmanship is the guy that sees his neighbor buy a BMW so he goes out and buys a more costly Mercedes.

I see nothing wrong with a group of GMCer's sitting around talking about the upgrades they've made to their coach. I do have a
problem with a GMCer that buys a Prevost and then attends GMC rallies and tells everybody how great his Prevost is compared to his
GMC!

I have no problem with someone going to a larger motorhome because they wanted or needed more space. For example I would find it
very hard to full time in a GMC, I'm too damn big and like my space. As a touring vehicle the GMC is PERFECT! I wish I had known
about the 23' Avion as I would have tried to find one of them.

Another approach. Went from a 50 footer to a 15 footer. Not a lot of money or time. Probably won't last 40 years.

I don't like driving something around that looks like S..T. Given that, a good paint job is extremely expensive and I know that's a major burden if you have tradeoffs to make. Mine cost $12k to paint around 20 years ago but I have to say it has held up extremely well. I have some minor bubbling right at the belt molding but you have to be very close to see it. I don't think I have ever waxed it other than wiping it down with Speed shine.

It's still looking pretty good, and now that it's stored inside a climate-controlled warehouse, I suspect it'll continue to stay nice for a lot of years.

As nearly as I can tell from the receipts I can read, our coach was repainted in Mexico about 20 years ago. I don't know what the paint was, but it is harder than Imron. It is way harder than Awlgrip. It is flatter than Kansas. I tried polishing it with hand compound on a wheel. (For you that don't know, this is a big Bozo No-No. Hand compound should cut so fast that using it on a power wheel could eat through the metal - let alone the paint.)

Nothing. I can bring it up a little at a time by wet sanding with 400, The panel below the driver's window took all day and it has pretty much gone flat again.

It looks pretty good when it is wet. I thought about putting some of the stuff for terrazo floors on it. I friend used it on his old boat, and it looks pretty good until the UV gets to it.

I would love to get her a 10K paint job, but we have a budget for the coach that is less than I had in mind years ago. If my retirement plans had not been raided, I might have done something, but as it is, the cost of a paint job would put us off line for four maybe five years. Thanks BHO, I will try to remember all you have done for me.

It was probably some paint that has been illegal here for years. I know a new paint job is almost impossible to swallow. I wonder if just a clear coat would work for you.

Jim Hupy say, "Do a good 10 footer paint job on yours and drive the snot out of it."

I got a good belly laugh out of that.

Mainly because my skills would make it more of a 100-footer paint job.

Call it "bragging rights" to "one upsmanship". Any person who goes to car show, has to admit that the paint job says a lot toward the merit of a closer look

In my case some PO gave the coach what I would call "a one day Miracle paint job", which looks somewhat good at about 100 plus ft . The roof feels like 80 grit sand paper. The sides have heavy places with runs and thin places where it didn't stick. And a stripe that bled under the masking tape.

I've been gathering info on paint jobs (8 to 12K, with a life span with care of 20 yrs +) and on wrap jobs (3 to 5K, and 5 to 7 year life span), but still something has to be done to the paint for the wrap to stick to.

My bragging rights will be on the body prep work, Which I can do. Then I'll decide the next step.

With the inside redone, the outside also needs to look good. Not showroom quality, just a10 ft or so quality, then it looks showroom at 50 ft., and it'll merit a closer look.

That's what I'm faced with in the paint department. Be it bragging or one-ups-manship.

Matt

It was probably some paint that has been illegal here for years. I know a new paint job is almost impossible to swallow. I wonder if just a clear coat would work for you.

That's what I was thinking generaly if it looks good wet a clear coat will make it look pretty good.
