Bill,

Take a look at the photo of the oil filter element here:

What if there was so much contamination in the oil that the new oil filter became plugged?
Wouldn't the oil filter bypass valve then drop 5-6 PSI?

I just had a call from the lurker with the oil pressure problem. He
reports that after changing the filter the pressure seems to be back up.
He's warmed the engine thoroughly in the shop, but not yet taken it on the
road because of the outside temperature; he'll do that when it warms up --
possibly a few days from not -- and report again.

To answer a few of the earlier questions:

1. The heads were changed merely because of leaky valves in one cylinder;
he installed a set of heads I provided from my local engine builder; there
was no other engine problem.

2. The oil was not contaminated before the head swap, and I'd be VERY
surprised if he introduced any debris during the change. Especially since
the engine had been apart before and therefore probably had no turkey tray
to accumulate charred oil. The water was drained well before the heads
were removed. The oil was replaced after the repair simply out of an
abundance of caution.

3. The before and after filters (Wix?) were nominally identical.

4. He still runs the OEM oil pressure gauge with a fairly new sender, as
well as a high quality aftermarket gauge. The gauges both respond
similarly.

He sends his appreciation for all the thoughtful consideration of the
problem and helpful comments.

We'll let you know the hot engine run results later.

OK !! Nothing serious!! Glad things worked out.

Now can he please help us out?

Please could he take apart the filter and identify why it was the cause. It would sure help with the knowledge base.
AND I'm real curious now.

Best regards

Rob,
That Wix filter has an impressive 273 sq inches of filter area.
It must take a lot of dirt to restrict the flow!

Ken,

That's great news!

Tell him NOT to throw the filter away!!!!!!

I would suggest it be cut open and inspected to determine why it caused the drop in oil pressure.
