I was referring to what looks like a long lever/handle between two things
that look sort of like regulators 'way up under the left side of the
compartment.

My one suggestion about the replacing the dash is this:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g4899-new-dash-panel.html

As far as you're into it anyway, why not go ahead and make it truly like
you want it inside. Of all the stuff I've done to the GMC, I'm probably
most happy with and enjoy that. And it REALLY wasn't very difficult.
Compared to what you've done, it's really trivial. Just jump in and DO it,
like I did. That windshield rail you're concerned about as an attachment
location for the OEM dash makes a really nice basis for a new dash top.

I'll look forward to seeing it in Pueblo. :-)

There are some air horns that look like regulators (?) with the wiper arm linkage you might be looking at?
As for the dash, I REALLY wish I'd have taken your advise. I waited 7 weeks for the new dash because I wanted to save some time. Ha, some time saver. But with all the distractions we've had this summer it really didn't make much difference I'll admit. Just got back from a 3800+ mile trip Monday night that wasn't on this summers agenda and two trips to Las Vegas the end of June and then in early July. Just glad fuel prices are down. Razz It would have been nice to have a REAL custom dash like your masterpiece.

I am not familiar with how the dash attaches, but I have built projects where I did not want visible screws and I basically added a slotted bracket to lets say the vehicle, then the dash would have bolts underneath that would slide into the slots. That way it should not bounce, add some foam/rubber to tighten it up, and you screw mount it from where you can get access. Again, I have no idea if this will work, since I do not know how everything fits together, I'm just brain storming.

Hal,

I'm probably a little late with this, but I have a suggestion. If you could
find the Hydroboost mounting bracket from a '76-'78 Eldorado, it would help
relieve the angularity in your push rod. Or, barring that, loosen the
mounting bolts and drop a couple of alignment shims over the two top bolts.
This would tip the whole unit down in front and up in back.

Thanks Gary, I do have a pair of washers under the top mounting studs which does indeed help the angle. The problem with the basic design lies in the factory designed angle I think. Shorting the rod exaggerates the problem though. When the brake pedal is engaged and the rod pushed it reverses the angularity problem. The angle looks worse than it is as the ball end of the rod is recessed into the HB somewhat. The only way I see to correct it completely would be to design a new belcrank(sp?) and push the HB out beyond the hood. It's a little surprising GMC never incorporated the HB in the original design. It could have been made to work with a right angle bracket possibly. Anyway, I think it should work as is.
As for the bracket, I just modified what I had on hand. The Chevy parts truck gave up some more pieces for the project. It was only a matter of slicing and dicing a little to make it work. The truck also gave up it's PS cooler which fit pretty well. Looking for parts in the men's mall is an all day affair and finding anything that old around here would be tough. I'm sure they are out there if someone else is looking to do something similar and they could source one with a little work. It's always better to use something already built than to have to custom fabricate the piece. You never know when you'll have to replace a part out in 'who knows where' land.
Thank you for the suggestion though.
Hal

Just a short update on the swap. I took it out for a short (16 mile) run today for the first time. There are a few gremlins to deal with for sure. The trans only wanted to start in second and wouldn't shift into OD. Looks like a solenoid in the trans or a loose pin or wiring issue to trace down. The solenoid is only a $20 part that requires the pan to be dropped if that's the problem but tracing the wiring needs to be attacked first. I haven't even checked for a fuse yet as I ran out of time today. The cruise also was DOA which 'could' be part of the same issue. The code reader says to look at A solenoid which controls the 1st and OD shifts so that's will be a good starting point. I still have a MIL light on which tells me the ECM and injection pump need to be synched but I need to get the engine temp above 170 to get the computer to sync and I'm only seeing 160 max. I never pulled the stats assuming they hadn't been changed, my bad. The front diff only got to about 140 and there were no shakes, rattles, or unusual noises at all so I was happy with that for sure.
One issue did surprise me though. The front end sagged a good 3 inches on the first run. I have added about 500 lbs to the front but thought the new Huber bars with an additional 19% should be more than adequate to handle the extra weight. I hope they work out.
The little 3 kw Kubota genset pulled the old A/C just fine with the Magnum inverter/charger pumping so that seems to be a go.

Hadn't posted any pictures of the gen set installation and thought they may be of interest to some. Not as quiet as I had hoped but probably quieter than the Onan was (I hope).
