Just some pictures of the progress. Hope to do a trial start within the next two weeks. Just waiting on a few odd ball bits and pieces. Mac says the dash should ship by Thursday so I'll have the rest of the sensors to button things up and get fluids into her.
Still have to build a jig to move the old out and the new into place.

Thank you guys for the kind words, I sure hope all goes well. It's ended up being a larger black hole($$$) than planned but I learned years ago from racing/off road playing to go with the best you can afford the first time around and MAYBE things will live.
Trying to sort out the brakes as well as what direction to go with sound attenuation abetment. Lots of bum information on reducing noise and a lot of products but still too many 'snake oil' salesmen out there. I'm leaning toward some type of under carpet mass product or lead. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks for the continued interest in the project.
Hal

Hal, I used a product called FatMat for sound dampening when I remodeled the interior of my coach. It is a butyl product that is has similar performance characteristics to Dynamat, but at a fraction of the cost. I installed it from the fire wall to just behind the side door and have been very happy with the results. I get quite a few comments from passengers about how quiet it is when traveling. One thing I learned when researching this, is that a lot of these types of products produce an offensive odor, especially as temperatures increase. Fatmat has no odor at all and is easy to install. I highly recommend it. Bob

Bob,

Did you use the 80 ml? How does it attach, or perhaps, how did you attach the material. Did you use something else in the engine compartment? I know there are kits for the engine compartment... I am wondering about FatMat.

I used a similar sound deadening mat (in this case sold by raam audio).
It was a thick butyl mat with an aluminum facing. Made a measurable difference in the noise.

However, much later I learned that this stuff is EXACTLY the same as some of the flashing products
you can buy at home depot and the like for a whole lot less money. I had a scrap of the first stuff
I bought so was able to compare it directly. The only real difference is the flashing product
is usually only available in 6" wide rolls rather than wide rolls or squares:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/USEAL-USA-Band-6-in-Aluminum-Foil-Self-Adhesive-Repair-Tape-8872AF6/202086180

Think I learned about it on some hotrodder site when I was searching for more sound deadening product.
I found it just as effective and a whole lot cheaper.

George, It's been a couple of years but I believe the product I used was called "FatMat Extreme" and if I recall correctly it was a 70 mil product. The installation is a peel and stick process and it says it is compatible with engine compartment installation. I only used it on top of the engine cover and not underneath. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get the engine compartment surfaces clean enough to ensure a permanent adhesion. . Here is their website: http://www.fatmat.com

Karen,

I’ve used this on my daughter’s Vanagon. I pasted some to the doors and side walls to reduce the tin-can “ting!” sound. Now when you close the doors they shut with a solid thud like a Lexus, not a tin can. The adhesive is tenacious and it really changes the sound of the metal.

Making some progress although I haven't tried to start it yet. Hope to try in the next day or two. UPS and FEDEX have assigned parking spaces here I think Laughing The body lift went well but it left a number of things to redo. Holding tanks and through bumper hitch will need work and take a little time. The exhaust tube/fittings arrived today (3.5" stuff) as well as Dave Lenzi built steering box. The exhaust will require enlarging the frame holes to 3.75" which may be a chore, we'll see.
Oh, and thanks for the suggestions on the sound reduction materials, still trying to find the best solution.
More to come, Hal

Well, we GROUND SOME SMOKE today. It was a little difficult getting the air out of the system, but she sounded great. The Racor fuel filter fittings wouldn't stop dripping so have some different style on the way. You can't believe the relief in hearing it run, there were a lot of unknowns with the PCM and wiring. My guardian angle must have been guiding my hands for sure. Anyway, now for the fun part.

Hal, looks like BeauKoo work to me. I just hope the transfer and diff work
out the way you want them to. Should be durable, though. Why does the ECU
have all that wire harness? How many sensors are you going to end up using?

Jim, I'm using most all the sensors. The water level sensor and fuel tank pressure being the exceptions. I've run all the dash gauges wiring which adds to the confusion. I installed a differential temp sender and added an aluminum diff cover for added oil capacity as well as strengthening the diff. The transfer case was the unit used behind the 454 in the Revcons so should be up to the task. I went through it and was able to upgrade from the original 9 ball to a 13 bearing on the driven end. The PCM/ECU has two 32 pin and one 28 pin connectors and the electronic throttle has nine wires by itself. I have a fuse panel mounted with all the mess you see. I didn't want to burn it down before I got started Razz
Tomorrow I plan on removing the old 403 and front frame. Next week should see exactly how things will fit. Wish me luck.
Hal

Got in a good day today. Old motor out, new in for measurements. Still need to clean things up and apply some sound dampening. Decided to go with the Silent Running product in the engine bay and Dynamat under the carpet. It seems some 6.5's make more noise than others. This one isn't the quietest one I've heard so hopping these products will do the trick. If there were more room a seperate shield over the motor would be nice but I doubt it's possible in this application.
Anyway, no real suprise's today thank goodness. In a project like this there are bound to be unforeseen challenges.
