Richard,

I checked the bolts today and the 1" bolts extend 1/2" from the bottom of the adapter and the long bolt 3/8".

You can use these measurements to determine if you can get it off.

Rob,

I was told off line by someone who would know that it can be done with the manifold in place, but it is a tricky operation. You only have about an inch to play with and the orientation of the gasket is easy to mess up. My problems might have been caused by my not using lock washers for those three bolts when I finished putting the engine together before I installed it in the coach. Over time they loosened up causing the leak. It took 30,000 miles or so to do that. I was in a hurry to get it done and wonder now what else I screwed up during the install.

I need to get it done this week since I plan on leaving for Wisconsin on Sunday.

If you have 30,000 miles on it I doubt you screwed up much else or you
would certainly know by now !

Richard,

If you look in the Parts Book 78Z (reference provided in earlier email) you'll find there are no lock washers specified,

I reckon the gasket got crushed over time and you sprung a leak.

If it is possible to use a tiny bit of Permatex Black RTV on the both sides of the gasket that's what I'd do. The problem in doing
that is you have to be VERY careful not to use too much and have the RTV get into the oil stream as it could wind up in a lifter or
someplace else and cause a problem.

G'day,

I want to correct this email, when the P/N 2-231 were delivered I discovered that the dimensions were incorrect, the OD was too
large and I contacted PH again. I was told that the P/N 2-230 was the correct size. I ordered some and verified that the 2-230 does
fit correctly. Unfortunately I ran out of time in the USA to install one and leak check it. I did bring a number of them back to
Australia with me and will check it here.

However upon my return I noted that there was a strong gasoline smell in my workshop, turns out that one of the gas tanks had
corroded through and was leaking. I'll have to fix that before I can install and test the o-ring.

Matt,

As promised I called Parker Hannifin today and spoke to an Applications Engineer. I gave him he ID / OD / Depth of the groove in the
oil cooler adapter and he came up with part number 2-231. He noted that it would fill 70% of the groove and have 18% compression. He
suggested when I call one of the PH distributors to tell them I wanted a general purpose O-ring compatible with engine oil at 260°
F. He noted that Viton would be better than silicone.

I then called a PH distributor here in Houston and their min order was $10.00 so I ordered 10 of them for $12.12. The distributor is
on the other side of Houston so I told him to ship them.

When they arrive I will check them in the oil cooler adapter I have here and photograph the result.
