Why can't you flip the base and adjuster around 180 degrees so that they slide down and back rather than up and back? If the seat base pattern is symmetrical, you should be able to flip it.

I may be mistaken, but if you turned only the exposed metal wedge around would you not be tilted toward the front of the GMC instead of level? You would have to flip both the exposed metal base and the base under the carpet to keep it level.

I'm 6'5" and have a 76 Eleganza that had OEM seats. Although I found them uncomfortable, my problem was with legroom rather than height. I had a welder add a 2" plate to the base and it gave me additional room to slide back. That didn't work as well in my rear twin Royale since the driver's seat hit the kitchen cabinet.

I've never felt as though I'm looking through the top of the windshield and, in fact, would like to sit a bit higher up. (Maybe a cushion). I do have the round wooden ball seat covers and after a few hours of driving I think I could count those balls with my bony rear end.

I think the '76 seats must have been very different from the '73s although both could stand upgrading. My 65 year old semi-arthritic body could use some upgrading, also.

Admittedly, since I've only been able to drive about 50 miles in my coach without breakdown, my experience is limited. However, the Flex-Steel seats that came with "Money Pit" are VERY comfortable even though the fabric is very worn.

After I got back from San Antonio a year ago, I could hardly walk. Limped into my doctor's place and the P.A. did a history. Then she asked for my wallet. It's about an inch thick. She claimed if I toss it someplace, it keeps from favoring one cheek when seated, which leads sometimes to a pinched nerve. I found out, she's right. Any chance you're sitting on a wallet or something like on one side?

It's likely to be sciatica, frequently caused by wallets in rear pockets. I sometimes forget to do a "walletectomy" before I embark on an extended drive!

I'm also 6'5" and what I did was hit the local Pic-A-Part for conversion van seats and pedestals. The two I talked to are $25/per seat. it made my 3,000 trip to Huston very comfortable. The only down side is now I'm low and back enough that I can't see the Speedo/turn signal indicator so I'll have to do a steering wheel swap.

yep, I was that guy with the turn signal on for miles Smile

Good luck

Have you considered adding spacers to raise the seat? Washers, close pipe nipples, uni-strut between the seat and rails, even a little helps. I have done that to almost every vehicle I have ever owned. Not tall, but I seem to have long legs and like to sit high and back.

I m 6'3" and had the same issues as all of the others on this forum. That being that gmc made this coach for height challenged people. Anyways, I read somewhere to move the seat back 2" and it made all the difference in the world. I also added washers under the front bolts to give it some angle.

here is all you have to do:

1) remove the four nuts under the tracks
2) remove seat
3) drill 4 holes exactly 2" further back. (I think I used a 3/8" bit).
4) replace seat and tighten bolts. To gain some angle, just put 6 washers under the front bolts.

It was absolutely worth every bit of the 30 minutes it took me to do this!

P.s. I just previewed my post and realize the humor in the title

The seats in my 2006 Toyota Sienna are great. The drivers seat (powered) has a powered lumbar support bag which I find very good. (It only has one armrest though, but I think I could work around that)
Middle row have similar seats to the Oddessey. I'd certainly look for a set from a breakers yard. They are still in very good condition even after 8 years, two kids and 120,000 miles

Would cloth (in good condition) be better than leather/pleather? With the glass house and dubious air would leather/pleather not get kind of sticky?

""Jared,

You answered my questions albeit indirectly.

What you can do is buy a set of Odyssey seats and install them on swivel bases like the ones in this presentation:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g5090-seats-from-honda-odyssey.html

Those seat bases are available from Cinnabar 1-800-720-2227; talk to Steve.

They come in two heights: 8 inch and 10 inch, IIRC Steve said only the 10 were left.

The Honda seats use the built in front to rear adjustment.

Regards,
Rob M.""

Don't forget that the Chrysler/Dodge seats are the same and much more plentiful. Also they are availabel in cloth:

I have air ride seats from a Class 8 Tractor in my GMC.
Very comfortable, lots of different support options.
I have driven straight from NC to CA by myself only stopping to eat and sleep and I had no issues.
I am 5'10" and I have them raised as high as they go, there was a spacer on the bottom when I got them that I took off.
I kind of wish I had kept it so the seats would not be at the highest point while driving.
It restricts the air suspension slightly.
I wish I had picked up a set with heat and massage.
Maybe the next set will have that.

Iā€™m going to hold and run the snot out of it this summer.

The seats I have are not ideal, but they will work, and there are a ton of other things i need to attend to.

BTW, I found the top for the air cleaner.

I'm 6-5 and one of the best things I ever did is install some $25 reclinging capton's seats out of the junk yard. I have the swivel seats so it was no problem lowering them. and with the recline ... perfict. Only draw back isI can't see the bottom of the gauges.

Have you considered just grabming some seats and bases out of the junkyard? just make sure you get a set with arms on both sides.

may be the besst $50 you every spent.

If anyone is interested, here is a pair that is available.
This is the best price I have seen.

They are about 45 minutes from me, so I can at least pick them up for you.

I am fairly certain cloth or leather replacement covers are available.

My coach has FlexSteel front seats which I love. I don't know if Norris fitted them or a PO stuck them in. They're done in cloth, when it dies I will have several naugas sacrificed for a recover. I can't afford leather, but Naugahyde and vinyl shed fur which cloth does not. If I ever downgrade to a 26 footer, the seats will trade before the 23 foot leaves.
