Thanks Sean for the updates and details. Will take a good look at your schematic - thanks for that.
Counting my lucky stars today as I am a 1/2 mile from the epicenter of a pretty decent earthquake we had last night and my wheel-less GMC managed to stay planted on the four sets of cribbing in the garage. Coulda been ugly. Good news is we got rid of some knick-knacks that were past their prime, only hassle was a broken water supply line in the house.
Anyway, I thought a lot about the LOP switch set-up and I think I'm going to try using an electronic solution that utilizes a tach signal to switch the pumps on or off and also features a 3 second prime feature when you first turn the ignition on. Here's what I'm thinking about:
http://www.revolutionelectronics.com/Fuel_Pump.html
And I think I'll also add a fuel pressure gauge on the dash to keep track of the in-tank pumps.
Now back to fixing things non-GMC related.
good luck -

Update: tanks are done, installed new lock rings and o rings, pressure tested with soapy water all good. Tank straps mounted (plasti-dip on the tank side and grade 8 button head hex bolts and lock nuts). I assembled my pumps, filters and check valves. I was hoping to get the pumps closer to the floor, but after fiddling for too long, I accepted the fact that they will be a wee bit exposed. The torsion bar yoke is still far lower than the filter. I'm not too worried. the vapor lines were challenging.

I had hoped on brazing or soldering it...no chance, nothing would stick to it and my mig burned right through. I wound up painstakingly weaving the ends of the wires through and bending them back. The external 100 micron filter will protect the pump, and the 10 micron paper element in the Delco filter will get the small stuff.

Here it is on the sender, I will probably put a worm clamp on to keep it in place.

Sean,
Where did you source that level sender. I didn't find anything like that in my searches.

Matt, $22 was worth a shot, had to do some finagling to get the float right, I'm at 3 ohms at bottom and 88 at full, gmc guage reads exactly full, and low level sensor works. I installed the resistor on stand-offs go get the float on the correct side and not interfere with the pick-up. Sorry I cannot get the link to paste properly.

Matt,
You may find this a better solution:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Two-line-sending-unit-GM-Full-size-cars-1973-1976-Stainless-Steel-W-O-AC-/330836201902?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories& amp;hash=item4d075fd1ae

I bought a very similar one, with 3 lines (I didn't realize the 2-line was
available), recently and when I had the Main tank down a few weeks ago made
it fit. Not difficult at all: I cut the 3rd line off, folded it back on
itself, and sealed the cut end with JB Weld. To make it fit the tank, I
cut off the sock and bent that end just a little to match the OEM a little
better. A compression union replaced the excess standpipe above the level
sensor and enabled me to aim the pickup end into the lowest part of the
tank bottom. I had to straighten and re-bend the float rod to achieve full
travel for our tank. A couple of trivial modifications to the positioning
and grounding ears on the mounting flange with a Dremel made it fit
perfectly. The long SS tubes reach at least 1/2 way to the edge of our
tanks, allowing plenty of room for whatever extension attachment method you
choose to employ. Notice that the new seal and ring are included.
Here's the link to the exact 3-link version I ordered:

I've got about 2400 miles on the installation now and can finally guess
pretty accurately how much gas the tanks will hold based on the gauge
reading.
