Today was an off day for me. After doing fall photos (which are apparently
a thing) with my lovely wife Dana, she accompanied me to work on the coach.
We got the wheels on and partway through Tom P. showed up and gave us much
needed additional assistance. :-) especially his impact wrench.
All the blocks were removed, the airbags were inflated, and the coach was
lowered the ground where she now sits under her own power.
None of my bottle jacks were compatible with my jack hook, so I wound up
buying another bottle jack that's only six times, but I think it gets the
job done without interference between the Jack Hook and the jack itself.
I left the battery on the charger last night, but I don't think it took a
charge. The battery is a side post, and I had to screw in a couple of
posts so I could hook my alligator clips to it. Perhaps it was not getting
a good connection.
However we were able to jump off the coach using my Subaru. The engine
seems to run nicely.
I have some sort of fuel leak however in the fuel line. The fuel line comes
from my fuel-cell that sits in the passenger seat floor board. I need to
take a look at the maintenance manual and see where that fuel line connects
to. The leak seems to be closer to the carb end than the fuel cell end.
Did not eyeball the source.
I disconnected the gas line from the fuel-cell so that it would not siphon
gas out of the fuel cell and onto the ground.
We cleaned everything up and Tom went to the junkyard to see if he could
get any windshield wipers from the various Dustbuster vans that are there.
We also discussed the possibility of traveling down to the coast some
upcoming weekend to work on Betty's Onan generator.
Tom, were you wanting to do that this coming weekend? I must admit I am a
little unclear, but I'm down for it or whatever we need to do to help Miss
Betty out. I've got my Onan baseball cap that Mr. Hart gave me and
everything. :-) does Betty know about this? :-) we should probably
coordinate with her to make sure everything is okay, she might not like
being invaded. :-)
The weather was absolutely gorgeous. Bright blue skies, sunshine, 65°,
light winds, nice and dry. I could not think of a better day to be playing
with my coach or better people to be with.
Today was a good day.

Robin,
Sounds good!
The fuel cell should be connected to the inlet of the fuel pump on the engine.
There is a hard line that goes from the fuel pump to the carb.
I would suggest you concentrate on getting The Barn Queen to her new location before you begin helping others! You don't know what
your going to run in vis-à-vis the front brakes yet!

Hey Rob, what page has a detail drawing of the fuel lines? I'm heading to
the coach with a for sure good battery, and I want to find the leak. I have
the Manual on my iPhone because I'm a glutton for punishment.

Okay I am located the leak. It is at the hose clamp holding the fuel-cell
soft line to the fuel pump inlet. This thing is a pain in the ass to reach.
Do I work on the fuel line going into the fuel pump from underneath or from
above? It looks very hard-to-reach. Is there a trick to this?

Robin, I usually just slide under but if you are dimensionally challenged, access by removing the right fender liner. Maybe a long extension on socket depending on which way you got it orientated.

Fender liner removal is a piece of cake. Even I can do it. Just ask Col. Ken. Mine are both lying beside his shop. I just haven't gotten around to putting them back on.

Robin,
All you have to do is call up Progressive and insure the coach a few days before you want to move it. Drive it to the new location
and call Progressive and tell them to cancel the insurance and they'll issue you a refund.
By the way he's only a Corporal! ;-)

Got it! The fuel line was split at the inlet, under the clamp, and for
another half inch or so. As the Mythbusters are fond of saying "Well THERE
is your problem!"
I cut off the offending portion and finagled the hose back onto the fuel
pump, and fought the hose clamp. I wound up working from above, hangin over
the engine bay.
She cranked on the first try and there were no leaks!
We are on our way to General Chang's Fine Tool Emporium for a socket to fit
Tom P.'s torque wrench he loaned me so we can snug the lug nuts on to 125
ft lbs.
Lack of insurance is all that is keeping us from moving! Possibly next weekend. :)
Here is a brief clip. Not my usual Cecil B Demille production. That'll be later.

That piece of hose takes the movement of the engine relative to the frame. Consequently, as it gets old and hard, either end where it connects to a piece of hardline is a common failure. Happens on all old vehicles, not just the GMCs.

Chuck is as thin as a rake so if you don't want to take out the wheel well liner you're going to have to jack up the front end to
get under there.
It could be that the clamp is loose or the wrong width. The clamp should be narrow ones which are about 1/4" wide. If its wider that
cold be a problem.
Before you remove the hose check the part you can get to and see if it is pliable or hard. If it's hard go get a new piece, make
sure to get a new clamp too.
Don't disconnect the pump end until you take the other end out of the gas can or gas could siphon out..

Thanks Charles. Removing the liner seems like too much trouble.... I shot
video from beneath the engine as Dana cranked. I could see jets of gasoline
coming from the clamp.
Rotten hose probably at least where it's clamped.
Taking a break for a coke while I percolate on how to go at this and see
what the Hive Mind has to contribute.

I picked up a coach in Salt Lake one time. I did not get 10 miles down the road before that same hose leaked. I called a GMCer I knew in SLC and he brought me a new piece of hose. It took about 10 minutes to change it in the Flying J parking lot. That hose is also a great place to install an inline filter. I moved another coach with rusty tanks and installed a big Wix inline filter in that hose to capture the rust. I went though 3 big filters in around 2500 miles getting that coach delivered.

Okay! Steel wheels are torqued to 150 foot pounds. Fuel leak is fixed. I
removed the broken roof pod, and put the cruddy rusty screws back into the
holes in the roof to (try to) keep water out. Dana played in the interior.
She discovered that the rear is not a full time bed, but was just a
mattress laid across the rear seats. She tossed the mattress, cut down the
rotting curtains, and was a regular Suzy Homemaker. She was desperate for a
vaccum cleaner but (a) there was no power available at the storage place
due to issues, and (b) the onboard vaccum won't work without the Onan
installed. I told her we'd drive it to our house and put it in the
driveway, HOA be damned, and work on it some there.
Now with video goodness. http://youtu.be/lWqzWiGkjR8
At the end, I point out a possible problem with locking the door... I'm
scared of messing with it, after seeing some horror stories. Is this a
symptom of a common problem with an easy fix? :)

Good morning, It appears you do not have an alternator belt?? The AC and PS belts will turn the water pump but you will be running on battery charge only. Hope you don`t have far to go.

Robin, in most cases I recommend removing the AC belt as it is the only thing in the way of putting the alternator belt on. But in your case maybe easier to cut it off as there is 2 bolts in front and 1 in rear to loosen ac compressor. However you need to learn sometime where they are. You can sneek the alt belt over the ps belt with it in place. I have not been able to see the top of the engine to see if it even has an alt on it? Another issue is why is the belt off?? Maybe the bracket isn`t lined up and it throwed the belt at some time?? There should be a spacer behind the bracket where it bolts to the head to align it. If at sometime the bracket was removed there is a good chance spacer isn`t there. You should be able to tell when you get the belt on it if it is perfectly straight. There is also a chance that there is a double pulley on the alternator and the single ps belt is on the alt, but not likely. Look and report back or call me if you want, I don`t mind a bit. Anytime you are working around the alternator it is best to remove the battery cable. You are doing great.. keep it up..

Oh hell.
*sigh*
Ok, I have to get 30 miles. I have no idea if that's doable on just a
battery without the alternator.
I may as well change out the belts.

Robin, this is a very common thing. Happens all the time. While in the hospital after my heart Dr. did my cath and stints he said he wanted me to have a cat scan cause he was worried about an upper aortic aneurism. (good thing as they found a lower aortic aneurism) The cat lab listed me as a hip fracture instead of an amputee. The scan showed voids in my left hip wing bone which is an indication of cancer. The Cancer Dr. came in and actually looked at me and said no cancer cause the bones were no longer weight bearing and was fat deposits and not holes. After reading this report my heart Dr. came in and had not noticed doing my cath and stints thru my right crotch that my left leg from the hip down was not there. That afternoon a nurse came in from the medical group and was concerned that I had lost 20lb the first day in the hospital. I tried to explain that I had not lost it, I had took it off and put it in the closet.

Talk about tunnel vision! Glad he's not your General Practitioner. :-)
Hope your presence here means you're feeling well -- considering you can't
work yet.
