Congratulations! Great looking coach.

FYI, transmode means GM did not finish the interior -- so all Coachmen products, ie, Royale, left the GM factory as transmodes.

Safe travels.

All, thank you SO much for your help. I was able to contact the previous owner of the rig I wanted to buy because of the registry and the quick response from Bill Massey and John Shotwell. The PO was able to fill me in on all the work done on the coach (new rebuilt motor and tranny within 5000 miles, plus a huge amount of updates / upgrades). I would have been scared to death of this rig otherwise, since the new owner really didn't know anything about it. The good news is that he also didn't know that the previous two owners had spent about $100k making it better.

Anyway, here she is:

http://www.habcycles.com/gmcmh.htm

The only real mystery at this point is "what is she?". The VIN (and tag - see the bottom photo) say it's a Transmode, while all the other evidence points to a Royale. I guess I don't care too much either way, but it sure looks (smells, feels) like a Royale, with nice walnut cabinets and the typical center kitchen, dry bath layout.

Like Dennis says: ALL "non-GM upfitted" coaches have the VIN as a transmode. This includes Royale, Birchaven, Avion, Landau, Roll-A-Long, Roll-A-Long, Hughes and a few others. NOTE that this includes _ALL_ 23 foot coaches built after 1974.

Nice coach, even with the "rather busy" paint scheme. (Too much on the stripes for my taste anyway. But I am not buying it!)

While it is the rather desirable "center kitchen Royale, the layout is NOT that "typical." It was only produced in 1978. IIRC there really were not that many made, even if it seems that I see them quite often.

_IF_ I wanted a 26 foot coach, I would be looking for this layout. But we are happy with our shorter Bichaven... also a transmode.

Dennis and Mike, thanks for the info on the Transmode vs. Royale conundrum. I hadn't realized that the Royale interiors weren't installed by GMC.

Yes, I have a LOT to learn about my rig!!! I'd better spend some quality time perusing the last decade of posts here, I guess.

Or, you could go to Billy's info site and even find the original sales brochures....along with a Q&A, manuals of all types, links to suppliers, and more...

Mark,

Nice rig!

When you get a chance I'd like a close up photo of the outside and inside of the NACA scoops on the front of the generator
compartment door.

Regards,
Rob M.

Frankly, I enjoy enthusiastic questions from new owners. Even if they've been asked a thousand times before.

Mark,

Glad the coach worked out for you! It sure is a great looking GMC, especially the interior layout. But then I'm a bit biased on center kitchens Laughing

If you haven't done so yet, please go to the Registry page, and send me the particulars of your purchase. Thanks!

Cool Hello, all.

Well, I auctioned off my beloved coach on eBay. The winning bid was $11,650. Runner-up was $11,550. The winner was close enough to my target minimum that I'm OK with it. I think Brian of San Francisco got a good deal. At some point, he'll probably join this forum.

Now that Brain has driven away with his bargain, all I have to do is find where I filed the previous owners' repair records. Brian has 8 years worth of mine and I know I kept the old stuff, which dates back to 1980.

Thanks to everybody here for many years of support and advice.

Cheers,

Dave

I have a few units at my shop, 2 without motors, but in great shape, and one complete, just needs a good cleaning, let the ones without motor go for 500 and the studio unit for 2,ooo.oo, it runs fine, just needs the normal stuff, brakes fuel lines etc...
