Here is my take on this thread, which I notice has 100 entries so far and
counting. On Friday the 4th, I took my GMC to OHSU hospital and parked in
their 6 space RV lot, in order to be close to Mary during her most difficult
time. It allowed me a place to"stand down", a security blanket, call it a
refuge from the storm, put your own label on it, But it was close at hand
and familiar because of all the hours that we had invested into restoration.
Our dog was happy to see me when I came back to it, I was close enough to
Mary that when her condition worsened I was able to be at her bedside when
she passed from this world, instead of stuck in traffic on Interstate 5 on
the lonely drive from Salem to Portland. A calm port in a very savage storm.
If gasoline had been $10.00 a gallon I would have gladly paid the price for
the privelage of being present for Her when the need was the greatest. She
passed away at 11:55 PM on Saturday night, her earthly cares and suffering
are finally at an end. I was able to go back to my GMC and get some greatly
needed rest before attempting the trip back home. I don't know if you can
place a value on this, but In my heart I know that I was able to be at her
bedside when it mattered most because of the GMC. This experience will be
stored in my box full of GOOD MEMORIES. Can't spend em, but they are worth
all the King's gold to me.

Jim,

From all we've seen here, you've handled your very difficult situation very
admirably. There has been nothing I could say to help you, but I have been
thinking of you and Mary for the past few months. I hope you can continue
to keep your spirits up and that the pain of your loss will abate with time.
If there's anything we can do to help, I'm sure all of us here are ready.

Get out now and find distractions -- come to the Southeast and let us
entertain you (we'll find plenty of GMC tasks to keep you occupied).

My sincere condolences to you.

And I don't know about you, but I seldom camp in a urban parking lot. it's usually state forests of decent campgrounds.

There is a big difference between staying in town in a corporate motel chain and staying somewhere you can hear the birds chirp.

I do both - trips with the RV club are to state parks or nice campgrounds, and my regular weekend getaways are to a couple of favorite cities to visit with friends. I was using the city weekend getaway example to convey some perspective on the cost of RV travel vs the cost of other lodging. Also, my initial reason for getting into motorhomes originally was because I was going out of town almost every weekend and dealing with the cost and other downsides of reserving hotel rooms. For my purposes, boondocking in a motorhome was a preferrable substitute, and became much more than that when I joined an RV club. And compared to my first two motorhomes, the GMC is a luxury palace on wheels...

Larry said it best, regarding his "getaway dream machine / escape vehicle". Wholeheartedly agree !

Sorry if I come on a little strong here, but the cost of fuel doesn't bother me
much. In my opinion it's all a matter of preferences and priorities.....

The way Lisa and I look at it is this......we spend our money on the enjoyable
things that are OUR priorities, which is vacationing, etc. This may not be
other peoples priorities and that is fine, that is their choice.

Examples:
1. ...
4. We don't have $15,000 worth of snowmobiles, or a summer cabin, ATV's, etc,
etc, etc.

Jim,
I'm so very sorry for you. I had an experience that was a little similar only my wife is still here. We Parked our GMC at University Hospital Madison Wisconsin parking lot several years ago. The Hospital provides free parking with electricity to MH owners who's immediate family is a patient in the hospital. She had neck surgery. I was parked just a block from the hospital, and stayed in the GMC for the 4 days it took for her to recover enough to travel home. After 4 days I drove up to the hospital entrance, and with bed turned down, she was discharged directly into the GMC for a 220 mile home....a trip that would have taken a ambulance if it was not for the GMC. She slept all of the way home and then had a long agonizing recovery. Things are OK now thanks in part to our GMC. Hard to put a value on what it did for us in our time of need.
FWIW...a big HUG to you.
