This weekend I am flying to Macon, GA to pick up my second GMC, a Birchaven with a 500 Cad engine, Applied GMC 3.70 final drive, instrument panel upgrade etc. My first GMC is a 76 Royale which will soon be for sale. Will be driving back to the Seattle area, almost 3,000 miles. I am taking a few tools, my son (a real mechanic as opposed to me, an amateur), AAA card, credit card, Black list, Jim Bounds' phone number. I will keep track of the mileage and report how it drives when I get back.

Current route plan is Macon - Atlanta - Nashville - Kansas City - Lincoln - Salt Lake City - Boise - Pendleton - Portland - Sequim. I would appreciate any comments if anyone has experience with these highways or possibly a better route through the Rockies.

I am hoping for a pleasant and uneventful road trip.

you might look at Hy 30 just West of Little America, follow to I5 just South of Pocatello. Then I5 to I86 to I84. I like this route better than going down from the Rockies into Salt Lake City and than climb back up to Idaho on I84. Good Luck Don D.

I'm from Nebraska originally, moved to Port Angeles, WA in 81'. I have traveled the road from Nebraska to WA state many, many times. I would NEVER take I-80 through Wyoming in the winter for several reasons.

#1. Wyoming does not salt the freeway anymore and this results in shutdowns from hours to days, last year in November I was "shotdown" in Laramie for 4 days.

#2. The freeway is in bad shape and needs re-surfaced for at least 30% of it's total length.

#3. I-90 through Montana is in very good shape, light traffic mostly commercial, well maintained and is actually about an hour closer to home.

#4. The scenery thru Montana especially in winter is unsurpassed thru Montana.

#5. The weather is almost identical to Wyoming but the roads are maintained far better, lighter traffic, great scenery.

If you have any trouble in Nebraska give me a shout, have mechanics, electricians and plumbers in family living there.

Thanks for that reply Jim.
That was my thinking. But I have never been on 70, 80 or 90 in the Winter so wasn't about to make that sugestion from TX. Even I40 often shuts down in the Winter.
What about the mtn elevations and grades on I90. How do they compare to more southerly routes?
