Not much progress but some additional data.

I pulled the carb to inspect and replace the base gasket. I didn't see anything wrong with it but I had a spare so I put it on. No change.

Re-Re-Re checked the timing 12 degrees. Pulled each plug wire at the distributor. Good spark on all 8. I have 13 Volts at the distributor.

ALL, A L L vacuum lines are removed and plugged with new tight plugs. No change, still 15 inches of idle vacuum. I can find no indication of vacuum leak around the manifold.

I'm just not comfortable with the idea that the vacuum dropped from 12-14 at flat cruise to 7-8. When I was changing the timing I didn't do ANYTHING on top of the engine other than doing the R&R on the belts.

My buddy Beau is coming over today with yet another vacuum gauge and is going to verify that I haven't missed anything or done anything stupid.

At this point, unless he discovers something, I'm pretty sure I'm going to pull the timing cover just so I KNOW. I hate to go through the exercise but I won't be comfortable until I know for sure. The moral of this story is to take a photo when you do something like this. Embarassed Shocked *&((^%#

I dug out the instructions for the timing chain and noticed that there are three diagrams on the page that show how to line the various marks up. It is interesting that the diagram for RETARDING the cam 4 degrees is the first diagram. Perhaps I had a brain fart when I was installing it. Well, If that is the case, I'm sure I wasn't the first and probably won't be the last.

This may or may not be of use to you before you go tearing everything off the front of the engine.....

IN PARK (it was getting late and I did not drive it today)
700 RPM 13.2
1300 RPM 12.0
2000 RPM 14.6
2500 RPM 15.7
3000 RPM 15.9

First ...I understand these were with your coach just sitting in the driveway. Some readings while driving it normally would give better info.

I'm not claiming to be an "expert" & don't know anything about how DPatterson does his rebuilds on the Carbs. I'm quite sure from what I've heard he does an outstanding job.

That said ,those AFR readings in the higher RPM's seem to be quite on the lean side. I'm not sure i fully agree with G Kosier's point on the idle mix. A bit rich into the transition off the pump-shot doesn't bother me ,but the quick leaning out going up into your power-band for a 403 kinda spooks me. I would seriously consider up sizing those primary jets if you can. Especially since you are towing with it. The carb may have not benn set up by DP with that in mind.

Load + Lean = Dead motor.

P.S.
14.7 AFR = BS...It's a mythical Ratio Made up by the EPA back in the 70's
Every Motor is different,Every type of fuel is different. Esp this ethanol blended crap they are selling us now.
