Bwhuh???

Oh hell.

*sigh*

Ok, I have to get 30 miles. I have no idea if that's doable on just a battery without the alternator.

I may as well change out the belts.

It will easily go 30 miles on battery alone. I rode in a 1960 Ford pickup with a dead alternator almost 80 miles with the headlights on before we coasted to a stop on the side of the road (less than 10 miles from home).

Get it where you want it and fiddle with the alternator belt later. If you need some assurance, take an extra battery. It'll make it.

I may err on the side of caution. How hard can it be to put on a belt? :)

Robin,

MM X-7725 77-78 Maintenance Manual Supplement contains detailed information and line drawings showing how to R&R all the belts in
Section 6K ENGINE COOLING.

Note: additional information can be found in MM X-7725 on page 6K-9 through 6K-11.

You don't really know the condition of this coach very well as you only moved it a couple of miles IIRC. You are now going to move
it around 30 miles. You don't know why the alternator belt is missing. You don't know how old the other two belts are. You don't
know how much power your GMC will draw from the battery while under way (should be nominal but you don't KNOW that). Assuming you
will start out early in the morning you don't know what could happen to delay your drive into night. You're going to be nervous as
hell moving this coach and if I were you I would do everything and anything to reduce the number of problems that might occur.

You noted "I may err on the side of caution." I'd call it common sense to change them. Just like I suggested you R&R the front brake
lines. Come to think of it you should inspect the upper and lower radiator hoses to make sure they're good enough to make the trip.
Also loop the hoses that feed the house water heater to take them out of the system also. f

Or you could follow the Aussie saying; "she'll be right Mate, NO worries" and go for it. ;-)

My bad. I thought there was a sense of urgency to get it out of that storage yard. I have to agree with Rob if you want to err on the side of caution. Best to change all the hoses and belts (and whatever else catches your eye) as long as you are going to spend another day or week tinkering.

Piece of cake on a hot battery.  However, to preclude there being a load we don't know about do this:

Hot up a fairly new battery overnight on your trickle charger.
Pull all the fuses except IGN and BRAKE LIGHTS.
Spin it off with Dana's car and jumper cables.
You should be good for a hundred easily at that poibnt.

The storage owner lady has been remarkably reasonable, probably because
she's seen me sink tons of money and hours into this. I'm paid up till the
middle of November.

Taking tomorrow off from work, have a trial. May mess with belts afterwards.

Sick of working for the VA. Thinking of representing Veterans on my own or
for a firm that can keep me fed until the fees start rolling in.

That's another subject.
