But I was on a ramp feeding me from a Maryland freeway to a bridge over the
Potomac that would take me into Virginia. And that freeway had left DC only
a quarter mile previously. This piece of Maryland freeway is not something
any Maryland courtesy patrol or state cop would ever drive on without a
reason. The next entrance ramp upstream from my location, and the next exit
ramp downstream, were not in the same state where I ran dry. The courtesy
patrol guy who eventually brought me a couple of gallons had to drive into
DC, come to me, and then into Virginia before he could get back into his
jurisdiction.

I finally remembered to dial #77, which is the road emergency number for the
area freeway management system. There is a reason I should have known that
number, and a reason I should have used it earlier. After all, I was going
home after a meeting at the Federal Highway Administration headquarters,
which was about five miles behind me, where we were discussing the use of
systems engineering in deploying intelligent transportation systems. I got
to live out one of my own user scenarios, heh.

Well, duh. But I can't claim my tank was siphoned. When I drive into DC, my
attention is so focused on not getting killed that I tend to ignore things I
usually pay attention to, like the fuel gauge.

Also, I was parked in the secure garage, which requires a DOT badge. Only
another federal employee could have siphoned gas out of my tank. Surely no
federal employee would ever think of doing that. Surely not.

This reminds me of the time I was driving through Cincinnati and got
rear-ended on a rainy day. I picked up my cell phone and immediately
dialed 411. When the female voice answered I hung up. It was at that point
I looked at a partner and asked a really dumb question: "What's the number
for 911?" When I realized what I had said my excitement about the accident
turned to total embarrassment.
