Johnny,
Please post pictures when you get "All six to lock up" by year end; that's only 30 days from now. And then tell us how you did it. If there are no pictures it didn't happen.
Many on this forum have been fussin with their brakes for years and still report that they are sub-par.

Only ones who claim excellent brakeing are those who have installed both the one ton front end and Chuck Aulgar's brake reaction arm system like Dan Gregg.

I wish you success and I'll be in line to copy you.

In the meantime how bout posting some pictures of your dogs.

I had all six wheels lock up on my coach on the way to the Valdosta Dixielander/Southern States rally. A traffic light on the way to there in Athens, GA had a very short caution light and I was going about 55 mph. I hit the brakes and got stopped (barely). There was a lot of smoke around me when I got stopped. I have 6 wheel disc brakes. The front and front bogie has Lee Harris's discs and the rear has Albert Branscomb's disc brake with his parking brake addition. When I got stopped there was a lot of smoke around me. Fortunately I had a fellow traveler behind me that saw it all. I could have driven through the red light if I had wanted, everybody just sat there looking for a while when I got stopped.

Geez, my 23 will skid them.  Box stock.  All you have to do is clamp stuff enough to stop the wheel from turning.  Now that doesn't say the brakes are efficient (they aren't particularly) or that the thing is stable when the wheels are sliding (it isn't), 0nly that the brakes are capable of stopping the wheels from turning.  Mine locks the rears waaaaaay too soon.  At which point the thing's a total squirrel.  But it wil lock the fronts as well.  Remember, once the wheels quit turning, the brakes are no longer dissipating any energy.  But, as an exercise, find a straight, wide, flat, unoccupied stretch of road.  Assuming such a thing exists where you are.  Secure or remve al the loose gear in the coach.  get it up to 40 MPH or so.  STAND on the brakes.  all six should lock and skid.  At this point, you are a passenger, untill you get them turning again.  You're also doing serious dirt to the tires.  But, the brakes ought to be capable of
doing it.

Oh - the dogs.  I'll put some on the photosite tonight, I got lots.  Meantimes, here's a link to Ch Duke as a wee puppy, Ch Oz in  his salad days, and The Border Grrrrrl, who is charged with the proper raising of BWDs from puppyhood around here.   She (obviously) doesn't take any crap off them. The  Border pics are out of sequence, she disciplined the puppy for something, and the neighbors' Rottie barked at her.  You can see the look she gave him, she's ready to fix herself a Rottweiler sandwich.

Not sure if mine will slide the tires but I know the tv mounted on the wall mount behind the passenger seat will swing around and hit the wife in the back of the head just before her book hits me in the side of the head....

I have "excellent braking" with the Jim K. six wheel discs and the Chuck Aulgur Reaction arm system. I do not have the 1-ton front end, but "just" the Dave Lenzi hubs, knuckles, and "100,000 mile wheel bearings". On my recent trip I still had car-like brakes in spite of towing a nearly 4000 pound trailer (with electric brakes on one axle). I could easily lock up all six, but I still try to drive sensibly enough so I don't have to. It's nice to know I have the brakes to do it though.

And with that setup, you aren't likely to lock them up in a panic stop.  The original system, in my experience, will.  Which is not a Good Thing.  Yours will stop way quicker than mine.
The whole point of this is, when I drove the thing home, dragging my feet would do as much good as the brakes.  Given new lines, cylinders, and shoes/pads, it will be back to how it was initially built.  Not great, but capable of stopping the wheels from turning.  What I'm shooting for here is the starting g point.  Then I can decide what gets upgraded when and how much.  First though, it's gotta all be there and be operative.

Johnny,

No doubt you will be able to improve your braking considerably by getting the original system up to snuff. In a panic stop, you WILL lock up the rear wheels and therefore lose the effectiveness of that pair of wheels. You MIGHT be able to lock up the front and/or the mid wheel brakes, but I doubt it. I never tried. The second paragraph in the caption for the following picture, was the reason I decided to put the money into this system:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=34215

My brakes were not in bad shape but needed to be refurbished. They were very close to working at 100% and I could have restored them to original performance, but I was never comfortable with that. I made the financially painful decision to take the $$ I would have spent and add $$$$ to exponentially improve the brakes instead. I know that is just not an option for lots of people, but it was important enough to me to make the sacrifice and just do it. This brake system is nothing short of incredible.

As I said, several solutions are under consoderation.  However, the first step is put it how it once worked, as an old mentor once taught me.  In this instance, one of these coaches will eventually be sold to finance improvements to the other.  The new owner will get a working stock system to upgrade, and I will decide what upgrades I will make to the remaining coach.  A several thousand dollar investment won't be returned at sale.  So, I'll go with the two hundred solution for it.

So today in anticipation of upcoming hard weather and the winter in general, the parts coach is now over a 10x30 Visquine <tm> plastic sheet covered with 7 sheets of ASB. Next best thing to a concrete pad, which I don't have.

And, someone wanted dog pictures. So, take a look on the GMC photo site, at my 'Chick Magnet' gallery.

And three of the toadstone in the ToadStone gallery. Almost ready to roll for Eukanuba in Orlando in a week.

Well, I got the icebox and stove loose in the SOB. IG-292 fridge, runs on 110 and propane, double door. I have to plug it in and see if it works. Dirty as hell, but ought to clean up.
Also got a MAgic Chef 4 burner stove with oven. Top needs cleaning.
Also got about a 20 gallon propane tank. Needs wire brusing and some 'ZincIt', but it's still holding pressure. Gots regulator and 'leak detector' whatever that is. Mount is on top, iotherwiose looks just like the one in my PB.
Anybody wants these, come n get them. Kinda heavy to ship.

If you are headed towards Starkville this month, and if you would be willing to haul the propane tank with you, I would meet you in Tuscaloosa (that should be on your route) to retrieve it from you.
Do you still need 16" steel rims? I can check my source in Jasper and see if he has any.

Don't need the rims.  I'll be real close to T-town, normally I take the new road into Northport and then on to Columbus.  Where are you located?  We can find someplace close.  Probably going the 13th.  Assuming I can get the last two bolts loose, I'll toss the tank in the back of the GMC and haul it along.

I am about 10 miles North of Jasper. Since you say you go from Northport to Columbus, that means you will be on hwy 82. I never spent much time in Northport, just passed through on 82 on my way to Tuscaloosa, and that was 30 years ago. Pick a store or mall or restaurant or whatever that is in Northport on your way and a time and I will meet you there on the 13th.
