The Pinto would have to be north of 3,000 lbs.

My wife had a Vega Wagon (with the Faux Woodgrain) back in the day, but I don't remember what it tipped the scales at... I know it would be more with a V8

My Vega is ready for the drive train. I went to pull a part and found a V8 monza and took all of the motor mounts, trans mounts alt ps Ac and all other brackets and radiator. The monza came with the 4 or 8 cyl. I chose not to get the rear end as i have a trans am rear with the disc brake setup to put in it. Just gotta get around to it. I have the Cosworth to tool around in now. And go to the Year One car shows.We also had the Pinto Wagon woodgrain but prefered the Vegas

I am mineded of the Chev smallblock we stuffed in a Heny J when I was a kid.  We had the engine and trans out of a wreck, and saw in Hot Rod or one of the mags, that was the way to make a drag car.  So we stuck that motha in there.  No idea of torque, power, anything.  And no reinforcement anyplace.  The kid who was driving (It was his Pop's shop and welder so he got the privlege) Goosed it up and dumped the clutch.  And the thing twisted about 15 degrees, one door flew open, the other one jammed solid., and the whole frame was warped.  Someone's Pop had a pickup which needed a motor so we stuffed it in there and sold the Henry J back to the salvage yatrd.  At a 25 dollar loss.

OK, a question for the Gurus... can you remove the starter without having to remove the driveshaft directly in front of it?

I put a couple of cables on and a hot battery. Hit the switch and it spun over. Released the switch and it kept spinning. I unbatteryed it to stop the starter. Shook the Ign switch, kicked the starter, now I can put the lead on the battery. Tried again, it kept starting again. Disconnected the starter wire at the switch (unplugged) and the starter still runs. I'm thinking the bendix is gummer up from sitting, and is holding the solenoid contacts closed. Or, the contacts are arcing together. Either way, got to unship the stasrter. I'll have a look, and heal it if I can, or either go for an AutoZone 'forever' rebuild. I got to be able to unstart it before I check for ignition.(I got the term 'unstart' out of the SR-71 dash 4 manual which is on the net. I gather an 'unstart' in the Blackbird generates more pucker than it does in the GMC)

Johnny,

Yes, you can pull the starter rather easily on the GMC. But, I like to support it with a floor jack -- because it is very awkward for me to hold the weight when it is loose. Then just lower it down.

As for rebuilds, NAPA did carry the bushings, which is often all that goes out (at least initially)

Thanks.  I'll get it out this afternoon.  Once out, I can either heal or replace as indicated.  Advance lists every part in it, plus a Beck - Arnley rebuild for $48.99 plus tax n tip.  Unless there's an obvious trouble, I'll simply replace it.

OK, Advance has a World Starter rebuild, warranted forever, for 55 bux. I'll pick it up this PM ans stuff it in the coach. Since I have two '76s, and they keep their records by year model, I can swap it for a new one for the 23' road coach if need be.
Which means this afternoon I'll see if I can't get some sparks out of the old boy and if I can I'll try to spin it off and let it run a bit. Then 'get-by' brakes and home it goes.

Get them to print out a copy of the warranty and file it with the receipt. If its printed on thermal paper make a copy.

Someone here, I think it was DanG, noted that he had difficulty with his local parts store "loosing" records of parts he purchased
and he didn't keep the receipts.

Yep, Autozone lost a bunch of my records. I do as little trading at the local store now as possible. If I can buy it somewhere else, I do it. Was not just one part they lost either. Ticked me off.

I've had Advance, AutoZone, and Napa replace warranty parts based solely on their computer records.  I give them phone number, they look it up, 'Lifetime warranty, here'.  I think over the years they gave me four or five radiator fans for my Chrysler minivans.  Which is one reason I'll stick with the belts and the clutch.

OK, Advance has a World Starter rebuild, warranted forever, for 55 bux.  I'll pick it up this PM ans stuff it in the coach.  Since I
have two '76s, and they keep their records by year model, I can swap it for a new one for the 23' road coach if need be.

Autozones in TX and AZ have replaced some "lifetime" brake pads and one starter based on phone number. Really haven't had many other parts needing replaced.

Aw, I throw the receipts in the paperwork bin in the vehicle anyhow. 
 
Update - I got a $10 Advance coupon in the mail when I got in this afternoon, so I hied myself there and bought a rebuilt starter.  Sashayed over to the coach, swapped starters.  Easier said than done, it's on a sloping drive and the brakes don't work.  So I took my jack and cribbing, jacked the front about ten or twelve inches and cribbed it and crawled under.  The old greasy one came out and the remains of the front bushing came out with it. 
Poured a cup of gas down the carb and replaced the pie pan and did a Dirty Harry with the PO ("How do ya feel, Punk?  Lucky??")  spun it and it fired right up and ran.  Idles smoothly, engine runs nicely.  Got an exhaust leak in the right bank.  I suspect when the new mufflers were installed, the wrong gaskets got put in.  At any rate, I shall take my custom to the Worty Ornamental Gentleman's business for a set of the good ones. 
Currently, anybody wants it, 3 Large.  We'll heal the brakes Thursday and get it home.  Working brakes will make it 4.  Large.  The intake gets a trip to Atlanta Galvanizing to have the crossover poured full, and a set of blockoff gaskets installed.  And the air bags replaced with some that aren't quite as crazed.  5 Large.
New headliner, tires, and buff the paint if it will, 7 Large.At that point, if someone wants, they can have a reasonably reliable coach that looks good, new tires, good running gear, reasonably nice interior.  Camp in it, or use it as a starting point to upgrade to the Dream GMC.  Or, I'll keep it and slowly turn it into my dream.
'76 Palm Beach, side wet bath 26 footer.  92K miles, I'm the 4th owner, third owner never took it out of his driveway.  Second owner assumed room temperature and the widow let it sit outside for four years or so.

Yep, Autozone lost a bunch of my records. I do as little trading at the local store now as possible. If I can buy it somewhere else, I do it. Was not just one part they lost either. Ticked me off.
