Did you notice the year of the car? The style of the clothes/hair?
This has been around for quite some time.
Still a neat idea... just hasn't caught on.

The BMW roadster before the Z3 had such a door in production for several years. We had one in our fleet and it was a riot--and worked quite well by the way!! I still recall driving it with the door down through Sault ST Marie during the june car show

And, don't forget the hundreds of thousands GM full size wagons that had the disappearing tailgates that slid "underneath" the car much like these.

Didn't that window slide up into the ceiling also?
Did that diminish any space for the occupants?
What happened to that door? Did the Station wagons just go away???
I thought that was an interesting design as well as the side opening tailgate, which I also don't see anymore.

Ah yes, the Ford retractable hardtop. If you enjoy playing with the
solenoids in the GMC, you'd love the retractable hardtop. Something like
10-12 solenoids managed the unlatching, raising the trunk lid, getting the
hardtop in position and securing it with big solenoid driven screws and then
closing everything back up. I especially liked the way the leading edge of
the hardtop folded down as it retracted - opps - another pair of solenoids!

The plant that Ford built in Milpitas Calif to build the Fairlane 500's is now a
SHOPPING MALL ! "The Great Mall"....... when Ford built the plant, it was
in the middle of nowhere, check out that area now after the silicone valley
explosion hit.
Applied GMC is not far from there at all !

Named the "Sunliner" or something similar, if I
remember correctly. There was a pretty large

That was the name.
My high school history teacher had a 58 model. The last full year of that
experiment. It seems like production stopped in the midst of the 59 run. Of
course, the 59 looked ugly anyway. Now that design is rather common but back
then it was 'ahead of the times'. And the box in the trunk area was
interesting. You didn't unload after raining and driving for 400 miles
unless you have a fender blanket. I think it was really a parade or cruising
vehicle.

I had a '57 retractable. Guaranteed to draw a crowd every time the top went up or down. Lots of trunk space unless, of course, you wanted to put the top down.

Ford said was enough space for luggage for a weekend. Short weekend or only
one traveler.
Still, some amazing engineering for then.
I understand the ride was pretty good when you got all that weight in the
rear.
The 57 and 58 models were sharp cars. The 59 looked like it was designed by
the Edsel team.

All right guys, don't pick on me. I had a '59 a few years ago that had been cosmetically restored, ran, but still needed much more work.
the big problem was not the solenoids that operated the top but the zillion micro-switches that controlled the solenoids. On mine, the previous owner had liberally sprayed trunk zolotone on every thing and it would have required a complete change-out of all swithces. I did build a manual switch panel to demo the top before I sold it.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Peersonally I liked the '59 style.
