But, there isn't any aluminum in the oil pump. So where could it have come from?? I'm not sure. As I recall there aren't any wear surfaces against aluminum.

Previous post:

This winter the tranny started making noise on the way home from work, it sounded like a power steering pump that was low on fluid. I checked them both and they were ok.
when I dropped the pan I could tell the filter was very clogged, causing the pump to cavitate. There were a lot of little specks of aluminum in the pan from the pump!

Now this was after hauling a quad snowmobile trailer about 120 miles loaded with wood 3' high, a couple of heavily loaded vacation trips and using the transmission as a brake going down 7 levels in the parking ramp for work everyday for 6 months.

I changed the filter and fluid twice and it's still going...
I'm hoping for 250,000 miles :d

Note that Keith was talking about his transmission, not the power steering pump. He just said it sounded like the pump.

The little specks in the pan are usually from the clutch plates in the transmission. They are often silver and brass colored. It is not uncommon to find them in the transmission pan as the plates / pads wear.

I once had a transmission shop that was changing my transmission fluid and filter that I needed a complete rebuild and they showed me the metallic residue in the pan as proof.
I told them to just replace the filter and fluid and put the pan back on.

I drove that vehicle for another 6 years before selling it and the transmission was still working fine.

That seems to be a pretty universal trick. They must learn that as part of a transmission rebuilding class. I suspect a lot of folks fall for that unfortunately!

Yes it was the transmission that had the flakes init.
They were either aluminum or Brass as they wern't stuck to the magnet on the bottom, I think they were aluminum as they were silver;-)

The transmission still has a healthy pump growl, but it's working
