1st half.
Driving from Fremont to pick up my niece in Orange County, Ca (near Disneyland) everything was going well until we came down a long grade in 2nd gear. As the temp gauge began to drop the fan started to ROAR! It stayed stuck on for about 50 miles, or so, then it quieted down.
Well once we go into traffic it was clear that there was no fan action at all! We pulled over into a shady spot at a hotel in Santa Barbara and considered our options. My wife suggested "Call Jim Kowamoto" I knew who she meant. I called Jim, he gave me a part number for a fan clutch, I called a local auto parts store (Larry's Auto Parts) who, after some gentle pleading from my wife, delivered the part to us.
Put it in, no more trouble!

Folks, when stuck on the side of the road having someone to talk to is a BIG comfort. Talking to Jim K was that comfort. He was terrifically helpful and free with his time and shared his best method for swapping a fan clutch. What a relief!
Well my co-pilot was certain that running the AC caused the clutch to fail so we began our drive back without the dash AC. I've only just recharged it with Duracool and it blows sweet and cold. (Pulled a vacuum, let it sit for about 2 hours, then added about 3 cans.) It was getting kind of warm so I turned on the dash air and watched the temp gauge - no movement. She was soon satisfied that everything was okay so we traveled in comfort. One small issue (well, maybe 2) was when I cranked up the Onan my starter would hang and run-on. A bump of the starter switch stopped that, but it's something for me to look at soon. Then the roof air took FOREVER to come on. Perhaps my delay gets lazy when it's hot.
Soon we were zooming up Highway 5 with dash and roof air blowing cold. My Niece and Daughter studying French (and snoozing) comfortably in the back, all was well. I've got to get a Rostra cruise control, because after a while my right leg started to complain, but with enough diet Coke I was soon pulling over to "stretch my legs" anyhow, so that's not high on the list.
A couple of items that I might want to improve:
As much as I like the dash gauges I looked at the Digipanel on Jim K's site today and thought it might be a good addition.
New seats - the Honda seats look really good just about now. A side cup holder would let me take down the little table and enjoy the AC.
Steering is still in need of improvement. Saving for the Hubler front end (dream on...)
I've got to install my front cap speakers!
And my radio antenna seems to have gone kaput (or the AM/FM radio is shot)
How do you quiet down the cooktop? Short of 16" wheels and ragwalls, that d@#^ed cooktop clatters and bangs more than the 4th of July!
I've got to fix the bathroom fan.
The shower is missing - I'm not sure if I should repair what was, or install the shower valve that others have. I'd like to put one outside, too.
If the Pertronix fix for the Onan is really a simple as it appears I might do this, some weekend.
But even with this list, nothing is necessary. Our coach is running great. 850+ miles in 2 days and everyone was comfortable and I got to get my fingers greasy.
Who is it, Dan, that says "Life is good in a GMC"? It's true!

Larry--most of those issues are easily taken care of and not unusual. You mentioned the fan clutch being on for 50 miles--that may not be unusual depending on the temperature outside. Also, the current Honda/Chrysler seats no longer have the side cupholders because there are now airbags in there.

If it is the original magic chef with the SS cover, get some of the foam shelf liner that is available from most RV places and even Wal Mart. Cut two pieces, slightly larger than the stove top, lay them on the top and close the cover. No more noise, cost is only a few bucks.

Larry,
what you describe as a nice trip pulls back memories of our own with our
boys and Grace.
We have enjoyed traveling across the USA so often that our boys can
generally guess as to what part of the USA were in.
The fan clutch I suggested is the milder one that does not seem to roar so
hard.
I'm glad I could help.
I'm fortunate to have a great business partner and office staff. For the
spring and Summer month, we have Apollo helping us with orders and phones,
this helps the rest to get more done.
