WIFI at Port Costa
http://gmc49ers.com/

Just talked to /Gary Berry, he says he will be able to get-it-up (the
satellite WIFI that is) for the rally.

Now his range is not what it used to be;>), but we will be trying to put up
at least one repeater to extend the coverage area.

What you may want to do, is to buy an Afla box to use when you are at other
rally's and campgrounds.
this box (.5 watts - found by Dan) is just the best I have ever used to
extend the WIFI range of your computer.

they are available on ebay. Search like this:

plugs into usb
can use an ext. antenna
2 - 5 times the range

see you soon

Gene,

I bought one of the Alfa signal boosters.

You are correct, this little box does improve
your range. Super easy to hook up and use.

Yep, you are correct Gene. Best 50 bux spent for wifi. I have hundreds invested in wifi and this is the best. I was not a usb guy til this came along. I carry one with me everywhere I go, even though we have the Verizon card. It gets loaned out.
Yall have a good rally.

Yep, I'll have the MotoSat up and running. Anyone within about 300'
will be OK. I was going to get a repeater anyway, cause I'm adding
onto my garage and the Stretch will be further away from the house,
and since I use the MotoSat on the Stretch for my internet access, I
was thinking I might need a little more power. I've used a repeater
before, but it died (along with the Alpha card (which is a heck of a
card, mine just didn't last long)).

DOES TOO, DOES TOO,;>)
But here is another one from Kirk

yes, good catch, what is the shipping?
don't get the longer antenna, it does not help

an extension cable does help because you can move the antenna away from the
coach, but, I don't think you will need it

Guys, If you want repeaters, I have them. You tell me what you need and pay the round trip shipping and you can use them. I need to know exactly what you need. (bridge, AP master(root) Slave (non root/repeater), etc.

These are Cisco devices and only talk to other Ciscos. This means the master will have to be hooked directly to the router using ethernet or with an ethernet bridge that I also can configure and send along. The bridge is a Linksys WET11. These are available most any time for GMC rallies as long as your dates do not conflict with the GMCMI, GMC Eastern States, or Bean Station rallies.

Pleas do not say to just send it all since I have over 100 pounds of equipment in 2 large containers.

Just let me know.

Ken B.

Most USB WiFi cards are absolute junque. The Alfa is a pleasant exception. The Alfa is the only USB device I have tested or seen that is capable of longer range communications. It also offers the ability to remotely mount an antenna in a higher or better location which means a lot when running WiFi.

There now is an ALFA that is 1000 miliwatts. I would say do not get enamored by numbers. There is nothing wrong with 1 watt Alfa but 500 will probably give the same results. This is because WiFi is a 2 way street. If you transmit one way at 1000 and the other direction is at 50, your throughput will be what the 50 is capable of. Most access points are 50 to 200 milli-watts.

There is a ham radio saying "You can't work them if you can't hear them" The same applies to WiFi. I suggest that if you think you need more power that you look at a higher gain antenna since it works in BOTH directions rather than look for a higher power transmitter.

The Alfa is a great device and either the 500 or 1 watt version should work well if you have line of sight from the access point to the Alfa.
