Need to figure out how to get it out. From what I see. When putting things back in. Wouldn't it be simpler to make the radiator shroud into a two piece. With, lets say, a 3 inch extension of the plastic shroud to the rear. Trod the engine. And forget the horse collar it's self. Putting in a Cardone roller water pump, new clutch fan, belts, and hoses. Need to remove fuel pump. As I'm putting EFI on the 455. Plus I want to look in to see if the cam gear is alum/plastic. If so. That will need to be changed. I'll never make a dime on this build at this rate. Bob Dunahugh

Bob,
Take that thing and the four brackets that hold it to the engine off and order a new two piece shroud from Jim K. That's a much better setup and more like the one that is on later model coaches

One of the first things I did to my coach was to get rid of that thing. As I remember there was something about the oil lines going to the radiator being mounted to the lower right brace. I forget how I fixed that.
Faye Curtis makes a replacement full width split shroud. Jim K. sell them too. I think Frank Jenkins also makes one. A few people have removed the collar and modded the removed one into a split design. I was going to mod my old removed one. Some one wanted it so I got it our and two days later I accidentally ran over it in my garage with my PU truck.

The collar can get closer to the fan without worry because it's attached to the engine and moves with the fan. I suspect GM determined that the engine doesn't move that much in operation, and the plastic shroud cools as well for less money (GM's concern) and less hassle (Our concern). If I ever take my shroud off, I'll saw it in half and put a pair of angles on it. Getting my shroud off means either removing fan and clutch and all - and I'm not sure if it will clear even then - or removing the transmission cooler lines. I ain't removing it till I got to.

My only observation is that on the last photo in the link the fan is too deep into the shroud. For max output an inch or so of blade should be in free air. This allows more air to be thrown outward from blade tips. This is a typical design practice in other GM trucks.
