Hi all!
I'm a PROUD new (bought last Sunday) owner of a '74 Painted Desert 230..TZE034V100354...
111315 MILES...
It came with 16.5's on the back and non-hub centered Eagles on the front.
Started and drove like a champ, as did the 4kw Onan.
Trans rebuilt @94000 miles.
Brand new drivers axle, bearings, hub, knuckle.
I've been looking for one of these babies for several years and I'm hoping that I've lucked into a good one.
Very cool is that the PPPO, Mr Poole from Bow Island Alberta, was a longtime member of the GMCMI Club and FMCA.
With the motorhome I got a whole raft of old newsletters, maintenance manual and original owners manual.
Fortunately I am able to do all my own vehicle repair and maintenance, but I'm certain to be looking through all those old GMCMI newsletters for tips and advice.
I'm looking forward to the adventure!

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum.....
You are not the only Canadian here, not by a long shot. Most are good people.
Do us and you a favor. Fill in a sigfile.
Go to <Control Panel/Account Settings> and scroll down until you find it. Remember to scroll down more to the <Update>.
Fill in a real name, we use real names so I and others don't feel so stupid when we meet and have no idea who you are. GMCers meet a lot. Include a short about the coach and its major mods. All this is so you get good answers to questions you post. And lastly, a geographic reference. Did you know that the half that read this as e-mail don't get to see the header where it says "Edmonton"? This can actually mater because you will have issues that are not common to Arizona, but someone in Minnesota may understand.
I also have an Onan BF that is a joy, but the thing that made it even better was the change to flywheel triggered electronic ignition (points replacement). If it does not have a prime button, that is a good addition as is and hour meter.
If the main engine has not had HEI installed and you don't feel like hammering the air filter housing into submission, plan to install the ignition points replacement with a Pertronix 1181. I did that and added a CDI box and she never misses a beat. Plugs last until you are bored with them. I just have to remember not to go near the secondaries when it is running, they will find you.....
You will find this a helping and supportive group like few others. But, be aware that there is a very open agenda here. Not one bit hidden is the fact that we all want you to enjoy your coach as much as we all enjoy ours.
The only other community that I know of that is as supportive as this is that of the watermen of my world. For this reason, I have taken to welcoming new owners here much as a new owner or vessel is welcomed there. So,

Where can I get new Alcoa's?
A shop here told me they are no longer manufactured!!?
I think they're the single mod I want to do RIGHT NOW...
All my tires are shot and the new 16 inch rubber is on order...
The front are Eagle knockoffs from Taiwan... stud centred which I'd like to get rid of.

So I've gone through the mountain of papers I got with the TZE, and find it was sold in Eau Clair Michigan.
I have info from four owners past that. They guy who owned it in '93 had a bad week... blew the engine , blew the tranny within a week of each other.. $4000 US. That's only 20k miles ago...

A buddy who has a 23' has put spacers on the front wheels. He didn't say how big.
I have a shop here who sells 2" and 3" aluminum ones.
All Suspension bushings need replacing. Special application or toronado, or maybe 3/4 ton truck?
Anyone have part numbers?

You might want to consider doing the one ton front suspension conversion.
Advantages: About the same cost as rebuilding your original suspension. Easily found in the man malls, updated knuckles, common off the shelf parts, wider stance without spacers, bigger brakes, and more.
Not sure if there are anymore Manny Travajo kits around since he is retiring. There are shops and individuals with the experience to do the conversion or at least walk you through it.

I'd get a second opinion on replacing all the bushings...often what appears
isn't really that bad. Just sayin'

Well, been trying to post some pics from the phone without success...
Will try from home tonight.
But suffice it to say 45 year old neglected bushings will certainly get replaced.
Fortunately, since I've been wrenching on cars since I was 12, I can do all my own work.
Also, all four bogie pins are pooched.
Rear wheel bearings look "okay"
Ebrake cables need love.
Brakes shoes need adjustment and drums are questionable...
Airbags (age considered) look servicible
Air compressor is weak.
Will look at more systems as work schedule allows.
Got my 16" steelies and tires on the way...
