can anyone tell me if there is some place that lists all the torque settings for the gmc , I have all manuals but can't find any spec on thermostat housing if there is one .

Joe,
The torque requirements are scattered thru out the manuals either in the
section that you are using or at the end of most sections. If you go to
X7725 Section 6a page 68+ you can find most of the engine torque
specification. The thermostat housing is apparently not listed. It is
5/16 bolt and I would suggest no more than 12 to 15 FT/LBS as you can strip
out the treads out if you have an aluminum manifold. You should also be
using the correct sealant.

I recently replaced a thermostat on a 403 and have done so on 455s including mine. Go lightly on the torque. You are not holding anything on like a wheel that has any mechanical stress on it. The housing bolts go through the manifold and into the coolant / water carrying area of the manifold. There is not many threads there as the area is very thin. If you do not put sealant on the threads of those bolts, coolant sometimes seeps up the bolt threads and on to the top of the manifold.
I use aviation Permatex on the bolt threads before installing. It is available at most auto parts stores. I stick the gasket to the clean thermostat housing surface using anything. Permatex or silicone will work. You are only holding it in place during installation not trying to seal with it. I let the gasket do the sealing and put nothing on the manifold surface side of the gasket.
So go light on the torque 10 or 12 ft pounds will do.

I did an Internet search for" torque specs Olds 455” and in four different places found it listed at 20lb-

Joe,
Google "Torque Tables" and download one that you like and refer to it whenever the maintenance manual doesn't provide a torque spec
for the bolt / nut you are tightening.

Too late now, Joe, you have it together and probably weren't using an
aluminum manifold anyway.
But pursuant to John's comments, for the aluminum manifold, one thing to
remember is that the holes are not drilled through as they are on the iron
manifold. Getting a bolt exactly the right length not to either bottom out
or engage too few threads is a struggle. For this reason, I used studs,
screwed tight against the bottom of the hole, with nuts to hold down the
thermostat housing.
