I keep finding the Roof A/C air filters either not there, or not cleaned. It seems to be a filter that isn't well known about. Also
on most roof units. There are oil ports on each end of the blower motor. Simple to find, and lube with a small amount of oil. Plus
it's a good time to clean all the leafs out, and bee hives. As a note. The oil ports seem to have stopped being installed after

I messed around pretty thoroughly with my 13k and 11.5k 1975 units when I had to replace the capacitors, but never discovered oiler holes, and still don't have filters inside.
Pictures of the oil holes to gmcphoto site would be awesome if someone has, or will take some.
Ideas for what people are using for filter material is also appreciated.

Tacking onto this discussion... The interior ac panel has black foam glued
to it, which I assume is a measure of noise reduction? Possibly filtration?
It's quite old and deteriorating. In fact, small pieces blow out after what
I assume is jostling from the road. I plan to scrape it out. What would
you suggest replacing it with?

I bought a square of filter material from the local hardware and cut filters to shape out of it. When they begin to look dirty I put in a new piece. Cheap and simple.

I kinda figured it was something like that. I also have a heated shop for
GMC work. Just yanking your chain a little bit about the severity of the
winter weather. Don't think I will swap with you anytime soon. You make a
GREAT POINT about maintence. Lots better in a heated, well lighted, space
of our choosing, than the alternative of along the roadside in freezing
rain or snow.

I wouldn't driill oil holes in a motor without them. According to my bud who works locally at Baldor, permanently lubed bushings/bearings are not the same as oilable ones. You run a great chance of losing a metal partuicle in the bushing and achieving Condition Fubar. To re - oil a porus pe4rmanently oild bushing, put it in a pan of 40 weight and heat it and let it stay hot overnight. This should re - permeate it with oil.

And as to an enclosed shop GMC size, Georgia weather isn't bad enough to justify the cost. I've asked 3 suppliers to quote me a 15 x 30 tin top with panels down the sides - 6 feet sun side, 3 feet other - to fit my pad, but no one has come up with a quote yet. All three are like 'materials are about this much and sooner or later a crew will come install.' Homey don't play that shit. First one to tell me price, date, and terms is likely to get the job. If none will, I'll build the thing myse'f this spring.

I bought sheet of open cell foam from McMaster years ago to reproduce the filter foam. Can't remember thickness I ordered or cells/in count but there are lots of choices. The one I got looked perfect and after cut to size I used small dabs of coear Goop adhesive to attach to grill. As far as the degrading sound insulation foam, I scraped that out and relined the surfaces with 2" wide sticky female Velcro to dampen resonance and drumming. I just put a drop or 2 of oil at the shaft/motor junctions with the Zoom spout oiler and hoped it would get into the bearings. Can't be sure but all rotate and coast freely.
