My a/c squeaks pretty bad when I turn it on. The belts are not even a year old so I don't think that's an issue. Is there an easy way to tighten these for a novice or is it best to take it to someone?

Andrew the AC belt is particularly hard to tension. Several venders have tightening devices that work well. Search the GMC forum. Several years ago someone posed a fairly easy one to make yourself which I did and it works great.
Gene Fisher has some great info on belts to use and simple gauge to check tightness.

It takes about a minute if you have 2 people and a crow bar.
Loosen the top 2 pivot bolts, then go underneath and loosen the tension bolt (the one on the slotted tensioner) and then the person up top use the crow bar to wedge against the bracket to tension, then underneath you tighten the tensioner bolt.
Tighten up the pivot bolts up top and you're done.
5 minute job at most, and that includes finding the bolts.
