Rockauto's newsletter just arrived. Here's a trivia question
 from it:

Today's $2.50 gallon (3.8 liter) of gasoline equates to about what price
per gallon in 1967 US dollars (adjusted for inflation)?

A. $0.34 per gallon in 1967 US dollars
B. $0.69 per gallon in 1967 US dollars
C. $1.07 per gallon in 1967 US dollars

You'll have to look up the answer for yourself. Try to remember it when
you next fill the empty GMC tanks. :-)

The cost of fuel has not been holding me back, at least not when it's $2.50
a gallon.

No, I'm not giving the answer--others can do their own research.

But I seem to recall gas-war pricing of about 19 or 20 cents a gallon in
the late 60's, at least in Houston. Even at current real prices, it would
have been considered expensive then. In 1977? Not so much!

70's to both fuel prices and inflation" Denney

Rick, You forgot wages, etc. However, I remember a bitter gas war in South Texas, where two stations took the price down to $0.099.

When I was stationed in Waco, TX in 1959, there was a Texaco station, with
2 pumps & NOTHING else, where gas was $0.179 for the entire 6 months I was
there. Other stations were 2-3 cents higher!

The station I worked at on weekends and summer as a fifteen year old (Herschel Dawson's Pure Oil) had hoses across the entries which rang a large bell when a car crossed them. We met the car at the pump island and asked 'Fill 'er up?' and while the gas was pumping checked the oil and washed the windshield. When we had a sale on, we'd spin the top off the air cleaner and check the element, in hopes of selling a new one. Had a BIG wire bin with dirty filters in t. Oil was in cans and we used a cutter spout to pour it in the engine. We washed cars, installed brakes, fixed flats. For 65 cents an hour. Regular gas was normally around 26.9, premium was 3 cants more. I believe commission on the gas - which Pure owned - was on the order of 2 3/4 cents a gallon. Pure set the price per gallon, and always responded to price was with Amoco whose station was across the street. In that US 31 was the main drag from Montgomery to Birmingspam, we did a pretty good business. Regular got as low as 19.9 a time or two during wars.

Well...

I've still got some glassware from buying Atlantic Ritchfield gasoline.

And probably plenty of stuff that was acquired with Blue Chip, S&H Green, or Top Value STAMPS that came with the purchases of gasoline or groceries.

Special Promotions - pricing stayed the same but you got double or triple stamps !!

When I was in college in Virginia in the late 90s, a gas war in town had regular down in the 30 cent range per gallon. I was a food delivery driver at the time and I remember thinking about buying some 55 gallon drums to store the gas for when it went back up Wink. UNfortunately there was no storage for it at my college apartment.

Also, I'm guessing (Without doing the math) gas prices now are Choice "A" in 1967 dollars.

On the trip down here I paid 2.03 for 87 gas and 2.70 for untaxed propane. Any now people want me to change my Onan to run on propane. Right!

Ken,

Jim Miller says "saving one Onan at a time."

By switching to LPG "you'll be saving the PLANET, one Onan at a time." ;-)

I remember exactly as Johnny B explained it.
Except I was about 5 years old sitting in the reverse rear seat of a station wagon, that's where you sat when you were in trouble. But I was still watching the process.
We would always get gas at Hollandia dairy, a dairy with a so called mini mart/gas station on premise.
Fresh eggs, chocolate and white milk, and ethal gas for 19-23 cents per gallon.
