Good day,

for shipping purposes the LPG tank of the GMC needs to be certified
empty. Anyone know some google keywords to find such a business in the
AL,VA,MD,PA area?

I would imagine a "Propane dealer" or "Welding Gas" Supply place would be able to do that.

Hello Peer,

The only details I found was on our dutch camperforum:

http://www.camperforum.nl/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=8450962&p=1572685&hilit=Baltimore#p1572685

It is all in dutch, but you could as a german, perhaps understand it better ...

The basic line, shipping from canada the propanetank must not only be empty, but sanitized by a certified shop.
From de US only empty ...

Bye, Daniel

Certified by who? Or I could tie a toe-tag to it that says "empty" and sign my name...

I googled "purge propane tank" and most of the hits were about removing the air from a new tank and replacing it with propane vapor. Not the other way around.

One forum said a propane dealer needs to get the liquid out and then displace the propane vapor with nitrogen. Someone in the same boat as you (pun intended) found a place in the Baltimore MD area in 2013 that could do it. Next to last post of this thread.

http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php?topic=9974.0

When it comes time to fill it with propane again, they would purge the nitrogen and displace it with propane vapor before filling with liquid propane.

I am thinking that where I am is too far from a coast for the locals to be able to do it, but I can check with the local propane suppliers and see what they have. Tractor Supply and Ace hardware also fill cylinders, but I wouldn't expect them to be able to ready a tank for transoceanic shipping. It wouldn't surprise me if they never had anyone ask about such a thing.

Closer to a coast might be a different story. Like if we were in Mobile or something.

And there might be a limit to how far in advance your certificate can be issued before loading. Too long might not float (another pun intended). Need to check with shipping companies.

if you still want to leave the original tank i would suggest finding a propane recertification company. i reckon if they have the authority to recertify that the tank is fit for service they would also be able to certify that it is completely empty and has no residue left. i also think they may leave the valve off for you to reinstall and get certified in your own country

Hi Peer,

One little addition, I found in a write up of Chris Reek, who brought his GMC here to the Netherlands.
Here his write up, and especially about the propanetank some info:

".....The propane tank was old so we removed it, but incase you leave it on it should be less then 1/4 full of gas..... "
That was shipping from the harbor of Brunswick.
