If you read the terms on the Sunpass, it says "frequently used" 3-axle vehicles should be on a commercial Sunpass. Anybody been dinged for running the 'personal' transponder in their coach?

Frankly, I'm not too worried about FL, but scanner tolls are creeping into our area in NC & VA and the Sunpass is supposed to be viable there. I'll keep the Sunpass rather than sign up for my home state because it swap-able between vehicles (though it says a personal account allows swapping only among vehicles with the same number of axles). NC wants a transponder dedicated to each vehicle.

I move my sun pass around from one to another. They see the extra axle when I go through and the 3 extra when I have the towd . I have the account linked to credit card so they get there money. Never had anyone say anything.

GMC "third" axle is not a third axle. Both rear wheels on a side are connected to the bogey, making it a single axle. So like it or not, and whether you can do anything about it or not, they are stealing from you.

Hasn't this issue (number of axles) been litigated in California? I thought it was considered a two axle for speed limits. I'd love to have a copy of that ruling to carry with us when in the state.

Yeah, I see the 3-axle charge on our account.

>moved around
>get their money

I have moved the Sunpass to an NC commercially-licensed Sprinter and they billed that, too, since it was listed on the account's vehicle roster. Again, I think the problem will be if I try to do that here in NC though the NC site says it'll accept Sunpass as long as the vehicle is listed on the Sunpass account.

About a year ago, I read somewhere that all these transponder-based toll systems popping up around the country were supposed to be able to handle vehicles with transponders from other localities by October 2016. I haven't seen that mentioned on any of the various websites I've checked (VA, NC, FL) though they do mention cross-compatibility with other specific toll authorities.

Florida Sunpass did not work on the OHIO Turnpike this October. Clerk said she did not have any information on when it would ever work.

Does not the "T" in "TZE" stand for three axle?

Tom,

I might have, but the SAE definition says it is based on the suspension system. We only have one in the rear (Unless you have installed a quad bag with a center anchor, then you are on your own), as that if you drop the only (air)spring the vehicle drops.....

Don't bother trying to talk sense at a toll booth. Even the people at the toll authority are not likely more literate.

Yes, it does piss my off that at the Mackinac Bridge we pay the "weight based toll" as a 44foot long 38000# Greyhound buss.

Here's an article on the national system, though not the one I read earlier

It appears the east coast & northeast has cobbled together some sort of network. The NC Quick Pass page offers a hybrid transponder:

NC Quick Pass E-ZPass
Cost: $20 (Can be used on toll facilities that accept NC Quick Pass, E-ZPass, SunPass and Peach Pass)

If you order a Florida Sunpass, check your charges carefully. Few years ago we went from Ohio to the Keys for a wedding. I ordered one of the simpler, short term passes from Florida. After our trip, there were a few charges on the account that were impossible to have happened.
They had sent the pass to us before the trip via USPS, and as the postal truck went through the toll system to deliver the pass to us, it got charged.
We fought it, and won. Imagine how many people don't care and just pay the fees.

Johnny Bridges was telling me about Atlanta's "Lexus Lane" which is pay-according-to-current-demand pricing. We suspect they'll also be installing this on I-4 in downtown Orlando (if they ever get through with that). Anyway, VDOT has been making the news with a $30 premium toll in northern VA.

I put my Sunpass in the GMC for its trip to Jim Bounds. I use the same one as my cars and motorcycles. No issues as long as it is registered on your account.
