Has anybody had trouble from a tire dealer because the lugs do not fill the nut with alcoas? They are about a thread shy. Worried they won't mount if not a full nut? I assume stock lugs and thicker wheel= short. Hoping to leave on adventure to the west coast by Monday if I can.

Many, many of us are using the original wheel studs with our Alcoas. If one looks closely at the tightened nut you will see that the end thread of the nut, although recessed a little bit, still contacts the last thread on the stud.

If the dealer is concerned, perhaps you can sign a paper saying that you will assume any liability of using those studs with the Alcoas.

Brian,

This topic of the studs not being long enough when using Alcoa wheel has been on going since the Alcoa wheels have been used on our coach. The comment that the stud threads must be beyond the face of the Alcoa swivel lugs nuts is incorrect and does NOT make the wheel fasteners any stronger. It has been published several time in various GMC publications and here on the GMCnet since 1994. The most current was in the GMCMI Newsletter #84 on page 2 under the topic “Alcoa Wheels” Col. 2.

Quote
“The original stud and Alcoa wheel combination allows for .532 inches of thread, which is more that the pitch diameter of the stud. A longer stud does not provide more strength, it has more threads exposed.” Unquote

Most tire dealerships do not have a clue on stud strength VS stud strength. Emery is Correct when he talks stud length! I doubt that the tire dealer has any technical data to back up his claim.

I think part if the confusion was there was a shorter stud (earlier) that did not engage all the threads. Those should he replaced. My 77 threads both end at the same depth on the stud and nut. No excess but no skimp.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Got the new tires mounted yesterday, no questions/ comments about lug length. They are only about half a thread shy. Feel safer now, the old tires were from 2001, spare was 1995. Almost new looking XPS's still had the little rubber nipples from mfg. I don't think the PO put on many miles at all since then. Big test hopefully starts tomorrow-west coast!
