Saw on the main list that a longtime user (but not NJ resident) mentioned that older vehicles (which would include the GMC) will no longer need to be inspected in NJ.
I neither live in nor have plans to travel through NJ. But I do often listen to a certain mechanic (Ron Ananian) who has weekly radio show. I have heard him speculate that the real motive is that it will now be easier for the state patrol to set up roadside "safety checks", and he overall thought this would end up costing drivers more in the long run.
Just curious what others think?

Just curious what others think? If there is no required PERIODIC inspection, how can there be any law requiring any specifications for anything?
Alabama does not have required inspections. One time in the early 80s I encountered a roadside safety inspection. I had a tire that didn't have enough tread for whatever standard was used. I was issued a warning. While I did have the tire replaced, I do not recall any follow-up action requiring me to demonstrate to the state that I had replaced the tire. And there was no economic penalty for that "non-compliant" tire.
But having lived on the greedy godless northeast coast, I am aware that the state and local governments there are not much different than the Mafia. And if that isn't enough to chap your @$$, the stupid busy-body city-slickers even form their own mini Mafias in the form of HomeOwner's Associations to extort more dollars from people.
