I'm updating the dash and the new speedometer lacks a shift indicator. Looking for info on an electric position indicator and dash gage.

Glenn,

I think the one from Dakota Digital is the only one available. I've been
looking for several years (ever since my design in the new dash crashed)
with no other options appearing. Since I don't care much for the design
nor the price, I've just gotten in the habit of shifting by feel (I
probably never really looked at the needle anyway).

76 scoots for the Dakota one.Less than ten bux for parts, so you ought to could sell it for 50 bux and come out n it. Wonder whast the market is...

Johnny,

When I built the new dash, I installed 6 reed relays around the steering
column with a magnet attached to the shift column to operate them. For the
indicator I used 6 LED's illuminating appropriate letters on the face of a
Lexan block.

My fabrication of the relay assembly wasn't very good and the magnet
eventually began to strike the glass relay tubes. I didn't bother to
redesign. If I'd done so, I'd have probably used Hall Effect switches
instead of the relays.

One of my problems with the Dakota Digital switch is its location down on
the side of the transmission. The need protect the circuit in that
environment probably accounts for more of the cost than the circuit.
That's why I'd recommend keeping it all in the cockpit -- shorter wires too.

I'm thinking a single digit readout fed by Hall Effect or reed and magnet off the column end through steering diodes to make P R N D S L. Individual LEDs would work as well, and skip 50 cents of diodes.

Trivial electronics -- mechanical not so easy.

How is this working from factory ? Are there switches in the gearbox or where are they located ?

The factory has nothing on the transmission. There is a little indicator in the bottom of the dash panel which is a needle that moves horizontally. It has a spring that keeps it to one side and then a cord attaches to the collar on the shift (steering) column.
When you move the shift lever it rotates the collar and the shift indicator moves from Park to the gear ranges. You adjust it with the cord held under a screw so that when its in Park the indicator is at the P.

I removed the sender /switch from a 1990s GMC pickup transmission with plans to use a modern dash. Haven't done it yet buy believe it will bolt on to our transmissions.

another project with no time to complete. Sad
