G'day,

I was going to respond to the thread "ants" but decided to create a new subject so it will be easy to find for reference.

Since quite a few of us store our GMC's for a good part of the year there is a risk that the wind up with unwanted interlopers take
up residence. For those of you that live in the southeast brown recluse spiders are a candidate.

http://www.livescience.com/39996-brown-recluse-spiders.html

They can crawl into clothing / bedding that is stored in the GMC.

I was bitten by a brown recluse spider the summer of 2013 (or was it 2014). The bite occurred a Thursday and I went to a clinic on
two days later. I thought it was a boil.

The doctor took one look at it and told me it was a brown recluse spider bite and He gave me a shot (don't remember what it was),
some oxycodone to kill the pain (there was none), and steroids to help heal. The bite grew to about 3/8 inches in diameter and took
three weeks to heal.

HE noted that I was fortunate that I had come in so quickly; here's why:

We decided to bomb the GMC and discovered that the "normal" insect bombs do NOT kill brown recluse spiders! We had to find one that
said it was effective against them. Unfortunately I can't remember the name.

We checked into a motel for a couple of days near where Double Trouble is stored and bombed it twice.

Since then no problem.

Rob M.

Brown Recluse spiders are endemic in our neck of the woods. I've had them in the shop for years. Then a buddy told me about the Hot Shot bug bombs. Killed EVERYTHING living in the shop...Brown Recluses and all. I now have a spider my pest control guy calls a 'cellar' spider. They're harmless other than making small webs. The Pest Control guy says that if the Brown Recluses were around, they would kill and eat all other spiders so seeing the cellar spiders is a good sign.

In the summer of 1977, my dad was bitten on the calf by a brown recluse while we were vacationing in Southern California in our Class C motorhome (dad couldn't afford GMC back then). He went to a doctor in Anaheim who misdiagnosed the red spot as phlebitis, put him on blood thinners, and advised that we head straight home to Michigan. We got as far as Las Vegas, when the pain from the bite became unbearable (the red spot had grown and covered from ankle to mid-thigh). We checked in at the old Camper Village behind the Hacienda hotel, I hooked up the coach (I was 12 years old), and mom called an ambulance. My dad spent the next six weeks at the Desert Springs Hospital and almost lost his leg, however the doctors there properly diagnosed the bite and were able to treat it.

While we were there, mom rented a car and we lived in the motorhome for the entire month of August. My cousin flew out at the end of the month to drive me and my younger sister home so we could start school, while my parents followed a couple of weeks later by air.

Anyway, that's my brown recluse story. Coincidentally, my GMC was built in August 1977.
