We finally got our 3D printer up and working here at work and I was able to print out a pair of new bunk latch covers. I am very happy with how they came out. They look fine without finishing, but a touch of sandpaper and paint would make them really nice. Take a look here.

For those interested they took about an hour and a half to print out. I will look back in the last thread for the next item to try.

Looks very nice. No bunks in my coach, but I am sure that there is a demand for these.

Can the corners be made round like OEM?

Yes, the sharp corners was just a choice I made. It would be trivial to round the corners.

Which trim is that? Could you post a picture? It needs to be something I can pull off my coach fairly easily so I can model it.

The dash light label holders and piece that clips the holder in place would
be an interesting try. I get lots of requests for them

Dang! I'm amazed. I'm still trying to hook up my 9 pin dot matrix printer to the serial port. Smile

The manual will tell you baud rate, number of start and stop bits, and character length. Not to mention the pinouts for data and control signals. Piece of cake.

I am going to work on one with more rounded corners, I like that look better too. Dan has inspired me to get back to working on some designs.

Most affordable 3D printers only print in plastic, not aluminum.

As an aside, for everybody's general fund of knowledge, even printing in ABS, 3d printed parts only have (at best) 25% of the
structural integrity of injection molded parts. I have done some parts where I use the 3D printer to create a 'plug', from which
I make a silicon mold and then produce the parts in a semi-rigid resin. They seem to have been pretty durable, but this method
works best with thicker parts.

Terry,

I have to respectfully disagree about the strength of 3D printing. The number I have always heard when in school was 60% strength of traditional manufactured parts depending on the fill pattern. I posted the engineering spec sheet from Stratasys in the last thread. I believe for what we would use it for it is more than strong enough. ABS is a little brittle for my taste though. Nylon printing seems like has nice potential.

I was thinking more of a plastic that had some give or spring to it.
