After years of GMC envy, I took the plunge and picked up Robert Kulig's GMC II in Wisconsin about three months ago and drove it home to Mobile, Alabama - a great 1400 mile drive. I wanted to start off by saying it never would have happened without the great support of this site and many of its members who assisted me. I thank you.

Robert and the previous PO's really took care of this coach and it shows. It's a 76 Transmode re-manufactured by Explorer in 1996. Its a beauty (at least I think so). It didn't have a lot of miles over the last 19 years - only 27,000 miles, so it apparently was stored for many of those years prior to Robert picking it up around 2009/10. He repaired, replaced and upgraded many things over the last 5 years and it's in excellent shape. He documented everything.

Of course, I have my ideas..... I picked up a PD9270 converter to replace the Powersource 75B that Explorer installed and will install it soon. I replaced the bed in the back with the original couches and table. I am converting the interior lighting to LED's. Tires will be coming soon. I want to upgrade the Howell EFI ECM to add EBL. Its a never ending project, but that's the fun of it. I'm sure I will need assistance from many of you.

Its really amazing to me the amount of information available for these coaches and the people willing to help. Its quite a community. I look forward to putting some miles on this baby.

Yes, it probably will be a never ending project. Glad you are enjoying it. It sounds like you are the kind of guy who SHOULD be a GMC owner. Welcome to the brotherhood/cult/asylum....

Sounds like you got a good one! If your dead set on EFI, don't rule out the MSD Atomic. Sounds like they are popular and basic. But the quadrajet is hard to beat and easy to fix if on the road. Scott

DB,

I have been meaning to get on this sooner, but that is how it goes when one is traveling.

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum.
You have already learned the most important part about being a GMC owner, and that is the community.

Yes, they do seem to be an ongoing project, but that is what happens when you do the required maintenance on a 40+ year old machine. If you don't do all the maintenance, it will quickly become expensive to keep operational.

Speaking of operational, when it is, take it places and enjoy it. The pleasure it will make the effort of maintaining it trivial. KEEP A Good solid maintenance record. You will need it. Things will slip by so quickly that it all becomes a blur. You cannot over grease it, but keep trying.

This community is great and it reminds me so much of the watermen that are my world that I have taken up welcoming new owners as a new owner or vessel would be welcomed there. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Matt - between rallys

Thanks for the welcome. I've joined GMCMI and the Dixielanders and plan to attend a rally as soon as I can. Looking forward to meeting the GMCer's in the area.

I've got a lot to learn about this coach since Explorer didn't document them well, or I just don't have what they provided. I'll figure it out. Just takes tools and time.

Next Dixielander Rally is Pensacola, FL. Nov 13 - 15. It coincides with U.S. Navy Blue Angels Homecoming event. The GMC Dixielanders will be at the Lillian KOA. If you want to attend with your GMC, I suggest that you call the RV park ASAP. They are filling up fast. Tell them that you are with the GMC Dixielanders. Go to the Dixielander Home Page and read further information about this rally.
