Todays industrial water based coatings are a long way from what you can buy at the local hardware store called Latex. Latex paints are designed for painting over wall board, plaster, siding and other surfaces normally found on walls. Those marked exterior are designed to shed their outer surface a bit with each rain fall to keep the exterior walls looking fresh. Those marked interior do not but can be cleaned to some extent with normal household cleaners to remove marks. They work very well for those purposes IF applied over the proper primer.

Clear water based finishes are made in a test tube for specified applications like floors, clear coat on your GMC or car, counter tops, etc. Exterior versions have lots of UV inhibitor and are WAY better than the old "spar varnishes" that used to be used on boats for anything that will be exposed to the elements. Coatings designed to go over plastic or the laminate materials used inside many GMCs contain a chemical softener that will allow the coating to adhere properly IF the surface is really clean when you start. Bottom line is there are coatings today that are designed for nearly any surface that will work well only on those specified surfaces so you have to select the finish for the application. One size definitely does not fit all! Most industrial finishes today are water based and most are superior to their older oil based cousins in all ways, including low VOC emissions.

One exception I find pertinent to our GMCs is Hammerite brand paint designed for application on metal. It contains VOCs and glass micro-spheres and once fully cured (30 days or so) stands up really well to harsh environments like engine parts (pans, fans, brackets, intake manifolds, suspension parts, etc).

I wrote a manual for Target coatings about how to select and apply their water based finishes which you may find helpful. It can be downloaded for free from my web site or the Target Coatings web site.

Jerry -
I notice you specify water based finishes... are they now The Move? 'Water based' brings to mind latex paint which doesn't look as good to me on my
walls as the old oil based stuff nor does it hold up as well.... although that last mey be imagination, it's been a while since I lived in someplace
which was oil painted. I set some laminate with a water based adhesive - all they had - and the solvents in it were kinda scary. It stuck just fine
but smelled like something you wouldn't want to hang around very long. Is it a better choice for finishing these days? it >is< easier to clean up.

thanks,

Johnny

Thanks!
I'll pull the manual. Wonder if they're any kin to Target Sealants, who have a plant here.
