Les,
About 30 years ago, I discovered a worn-out splined shaft. I called an
outfit in Cincinnati that did plastic coatings. An engineer there heard my
story and allowed that they could
recoat my shaft, but as a one-off, it would be prohibitively expensive. He
suggested that I call Dana-Spicer as they did shafts like that. Talked to
an engineer at Dana-Spicer.
After I gave him my long sad story, He informed me that they made the shaft
for GM. He suggested I call a 4-wheel drive place in Zanesville and told me
the part # to ask for.
I called and found out they were very proud of their ability to fill my
need. Soooooo...., I called my good buddy who ran a CarQuest store. He
found a source and at a very
good price. I bought several and took care of several local GMC owners.
Then they were discontinued. Probably lack of demand. It was later
reinstated. Probably for Jim K.
Of course, without GM's big purchases, the cost is higher. Oh well, I keep
mine well greased. Anyway, that;s my story.

Rob,
Are you suffering from overexposure to GMCMH steering shafts?
The video has me wondering how common that specific spline configuration
actually is. I've seen it in use somewhere else other than our steering
shafts, but can't place it at the moment.

Gary,
Frank Condos figger'd out a way to re-coat the shafts awhile back and IIRC the info is on the GMCWS website.
Alex Ferrara figger'd out a way more recently and I believe he will share his method at the GMCMI Patterson Convention.

Rob M.

And Jim Fawcett had a whole new steering shaft assembly made that any of us can buy if we mention his name at Borgeson.
That is an excellent video for learning about offset shaft dynamics. Some of the suggested videos at the end were also very interesting.
