Good point about the shut down voltage on so many of the cheaper inverters, Ken. I have found the Samlex units to be much better quality and more load tolerant than the Xantrax offerings. The Samlex PST-2000-12 2000W, 12V Pure Sine Inverter is a particularly nice unit for our coaches, but it is $700 to $800. It does handle large loads and voltage sag well and will run both the Sharpe (non-inverter) MW in the Clasco as well as the very inefficient Panasonic Inverter microwave in the Royale off of either the 200 ah 4d battery in the Clasco or the 460 ah bank in the Royale. The Xantrax SW inverter will shut down immediately trying to run the Panasonic MW but will run the Sharpe for a short time if the batteries are fully charged.

One of Gary Bovey's pertronics ignition kits to make the Onan start and run properly is way more cost effective than all the stuff one needs to do to make a battery bank work for this purpose. Plus, it might cost less to run the Onan than the alternator draw on the 455 trying to replace all those amp hours used to run the MW in the first place.

BTW, think how far we have come since "Over the river and through the snow, to grandmothers house we go....". We will drive to Portland tomorrow with no snow in a Toyota Prius sipping fuel at 50 mpg and flogging a few electrons along the way. But, this is grandmother going to the kids instead of the other way around so it must be ok.

Jerry,

Sure glad you had a quiet Christmas morning to jump in on that -- saved me
straining my brain & I sure don't have anything to add -- except maybe to
note that most inverters seem to shut down completely at about the 11 VDC
level you mention as being so soon reached. :-)

Merry Christmas -- today AND tomorrow.
