I have a 4500 Watts Golden color Kohler generator in my 77 GMC 23ft transmode.

I cleaned all the electrical contacts, ground, tightened and lubricated things.

The carburetor has a needle screw with a spring that is adjustable.

My question is: How do I adjust this for optimum performance....least Gas consumption ??

The generator seem to run fine...loud and noisy which I assume is normal. Adjusting the screw up and down didn't seem to make a difference...I did not tighten it all the way down.

Advice ??

Thank you.

The speed is governed to put out the correct voltage. The idle speed is a small common screw (no knurled knob) on the carb. Set it with a tach (I use a timing light with a tach/dwell meter)to 1800 RPM. It should have an exhaust system and really be pretty quiet. The other two knob/screws are for mixture. I'll get you the proper settomgs fpr start up on those when I check the book at the coach. They really don't need adjustment after that unless you are at very high elevation.

I am replacing my Kohler very soon if you are interested in buying one for parts. Pick up only in Phoenix.

Anthony,

Without a model number, we can only guess. Most of the GMCs were originally equipped Onans. But some of us (like yours truly) have had a fair amount of hands on time with the little Kohlers.

From memory..... Your carburetor Is either a side or an updraft Bendix and it has three screws with springs. One is the idle air throttle stop. That should be pretty obvious. Another that is toward the throttle shaft, that is the idle mixture. Those two only matter if the unit won't behave when unloaded.

If I am right, the screw you both mean and might need to mess with is dead center straight down into the float bowl. That is the mixture at power. Assuming that it starts and runs, get it warm and then hit it with all the load you can. You can even bring on some electric heaters if needed. Get it governor set real close to 1800, then turn in that main mixture screw until the frequency starts to sag. Then, shut down some of the load and and do that again. Now, put the load back on and see where things are. If it stays running well, that will be the best you can do.

Want a REALLY good instrument to know how your generator is doing? Go find a Kill-A-Watt. This is a 30$ instrument that is supposed to measure power consumption of line powered stuff. It can report voltage and frequency with ease. Just get an extension cord so you can see it where you need to be to adjust the settings.

AJ,

Here are a number of links to the manuals for your GMC:

1) 1977 Operators Manuals: http://www.bdub.net/manuals/ops77/index.html

2) 1975 Maintenance Manual (X-7525): http://www.bdub.net/manuals/X7525/index.html

3) 1976 Maintenance Manual Supplement (X-7625): http://www.bdub.net/manuals/X7625/index.html

4) 1977 / 1978 Maintenance Manual Supplement (X-7725): http://www.bdub.net/manuals/X7725/index.html

5) Parts Manual: http://www.bdub.net/manuals/parts/index.html

I would suggest you download them and you will have a ready reference at your finger tips.

As far as the Kohler Generator that GMC installed in our coaches goes I could have sworn that I've seen a manual for it somewhere
but I can't remember at the moment.

I have one of these under a tarp which came out of an SOB. Could you post pictures of howe it's mounted in your GMC? I'd like to put mine in my 23' but it is too tall. I'd like to see the mopunt and what is different about the fittings - it only misses by an inch or so.

Turn the top screw all the way in and then back out 2 1/2 turns. Tune the similar screw on the side (angled) all the way in and then back out 1 - 1 1/4 turns.

Hi Johnny,

I am sorry I've been moving and didn't have a chance to take photos for you.

It is basically mounted on 2 rails that slide in and out. The long side of the generator goes in, in other words it is not mounted sideways. It is mounted in a box which sits under the closet which is in the bathroom, I have the rear bathroom.

I will send photos ASAP.

Thanks.
AJ

AJ -

Thanks, no rush. I'd like to look at pics, it looks like mounted as you say it will clear. It will be warm weather before I get to mess with it anyhow.
