G'day,

I am looking for a GPS program for the iPad 1 that downloads the maps to the iPad. I have Sygic on my Samsung S-4 but their Apple
version requires a later OS that the iPad 1 does not run.

Are there any others?

I know there are a lot that use maps on the internet I am not interested in them I want the iPad 1 to work just like a regular GPS.

GPS maps? Or navigation?

Maps with Me Pro has cached maps and requires iOS 5, which you iPad *should* support. It uses OpenStreetMap maps. No navigation, however...

The "Pro" version lets you search for POI's. The "non-Pro" version is free to try.

iPad 1 can only upgrade to IOS 5.1.1. Any app requiring a higher version will not load or run on iPad 1. If your iPad1 has The 3G wireless chip, the internal GPS is included on the same chip.
I do not know of a mapping program that takes advantage of the iPad 1's GPS chip. However, since my iPad 1 does not have this chip, I cannot explore this attractive idea.

I would like a program that works exactly like a GPS such as a Tom Tom or Garmin. You enter an address and it plots a route to that
point from where you are at/

"Navigation" it is... So Maps with Me won't do much for you.

According to this article, you should be offered an option to download older versions of an app, even if you bought it after the update:

https://sites.google.com/site/appleclubfhs/support/advice-and-articles/app-store-downloading-older-versions-of-apps-ios

This says to buy the app on a computer first and then download it directly on the old device:

https://sites.google.com/site/appleclubfhs/support/advice-and-articles/app-store-downloading-older-versions-of-apps-ios#1

You *should* be prompted to download the older version. If that's the case - I've been using Navigon (now part of Garmin) for many years (it's just OK and does have some issues). There are versions that supported the older iPad:

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/navigon-north-america/id321506742?mt=8

If you can't get it working - Apple will usually sort out a refund pretty easily. The apps also go on sale very often - usually in the 50% off range...

Mytracks is a GPS program for runners/bicyclists that tells them where they are and lets them plan routes and so forth. It supposedly works in vehicles. I think it was written for Android, but it appears there are versions for Ipads and Ipods. A google search should also hit apps that are compared to Mytracks.

Unfortunately requires OS 7.0 or higher.

Looks like I'm SOL trying to use the iPad 1 (OS 5.1.1) as a self contained GPS.

Rob,

Yes I did and understood that there was a work around that would probably allow me to download a version that would work with OS
5.1.1.

However, you also noted; "If you can't get it working - Apple will usually sort out a refund pretty easily."

Which made come to the conclusion that "Thanks, unfortunately requires OS 6.0 or higher."

I have not deleted your message so I can reverse that decision if I find I have the time to mess with this.

I don't think you'd have any issues - as long as you follow the steps in the correct order. Unfortunately - I don't have an older iPad to test with...

I only mentioned the refund policy - in case you had cold feet! I however wouldn't pay full price for Navigon - 50% seems about right.

Rob,
I you need to upgrade to an iPad II as a minimum. I have an old MacBook and a G5 PowerMac that only go to 10.5.9 mac OS. They are not really supported any more, but they both still do work and can office and browse the web although they are slow.

I buy all my Mac stuff from a company called gainsaver.com. They have a lot of iPad II’s for sale. I just bought a PowerMac Quad-core with 5TB of storage and 32 gig of memory last spring. If you reasonable priced Mac stuff this is the place. They also carry PC stuff too.

JR,

Thanks for the info.

The iPad 1 is a hand me down from Helen, I have NO interest in tablet computers at all. I travel with two Acer Aspire One notebooks
(a spare in case one dies) which I backup to each other nightly. I also have two Samsung S-4 phones in case one dies.

If I can get the iPad 1 to run a GPS program I'll mount it on the GMC's dash where both the driver and passenger can see it. If it
won't run a GPS program I'll give it to charity here in Sydney.

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,
I you need to upgrade to an iPad II as a minimum. I have an old MacBook and a G5 PowerMac that only go to 10.5.9 mac OS. They are
not really supported any more, but they both still do work and can office and browse the web although they are slow.

I buy all my Mac stuff from a company called gainsaver.com. They have a lot of iPad II's for sale. I just bought a PowerMac
Quad-core with 5TB of storage and 32 gig of memory last spring. If you reasonable priced Mac stuff this is the place. They also
carry PC stuff too.

JR

Rob,
Are you already back across the pond? I didn’t know that you had left already.

Another good source on the net is Other World Computing.
The carry parts and accessories as well as reconditioned computers.

They currently have IPad 3 32GB for $279.

I usually buy the computers not loaded up as gainsavers options are more expensive that buying parts from OWC which is macsales.com if you want to explore the site.

How are you going to use a WiFi-only iPad for navigation - since it has no GPS receiver?!?

Assisted GPS in the WiFi models is no where near accurate enough for effective turn-by-turn navigation and its coverage area has many empty spots...

In years past, this was the coverage:
