After 5 years of owning a travel trailer what I am about to describe has never happened.....
Outside waiting for the Hawks game to start, smoking and having a beer, the call of nature arrived so I stepped into the MH did my stand up business, flushed the toilet and while it was flushing I got a face full of little black flys or knats maybe that came flying out of the toilet as it was flushing
Seems these bugs are inside of my holding tank. Anyone else ever had a similar problem?
Seriously perplexed by this....

Damnit Dave, seems like your link hit the nail right on the head, stored for 12 years, and did still have solids in the tank when I flushed it out.
This sucks, and the first time I have seen it since we bought the coach. I flushed the crap out of it too (pardon the pun).
I'm wondering if a gallon of bleach plus a tank filled to the brim will rid me of them.......

I worked in retail nursery for 13 years and here's what we used to recommend. Go to Home Depot and get a powdered garden insecticide containing pyrethrins. My knowledge of brands is out of date but it will be something like Ortho Tomato Dust and it will say "safe for vegetables" on it. It comes in about a 1 lb can and is just a few dollars. Empty your black water tank, then fill it about half full (with fresh water!) and flush the powder. Fill it as full as you can. Leave for as long as you can, at least 24 hours, drive a bit if you can to distribute it around the tank, then dump. You might have to do it again in a few days as I am not sure it kills the eggs.
Once you get the tank cleaned out and the current batch of critters killed they shouldn't return. Never leave the black tank with stuff in it any longer than necessary.

Jared,
You might want to rig up a sprinkler head with a long nipple or sprinkler
pipe, connected to your garden hose and try to use the higher pressure to
knock out the caked on matter.
You seem to be knowledgeable enough to get it figured out with the right
parts and pieces.

Before most trips, I fog our coach with something like this:
http://www.lowes.com/pd_47139-316-HG-20177_0__?productId=4743325&Ntt=insect+foggers&pl=1¤tURL=%3FNtt%3Dinsect%2Bfoggers&facetInfo=
I just open all the doors and drawers (we keep things in plastic bags sealed up between trips) and start a fogger. 2 hours or more later, air it out and there ain't a single living thing in the coach. Ants, roaches, spiders, bugs, nothing. Wife likes that. In the South, we have critters all year long.
I bet you could tie a string around one of these, set it off, and drop it in the black tank and take care of the problem. Make sure the string won't come off for obvious reasons. You're going to want to get it back out in a few hours. The tank is vented so there won't be a pressure problem.
I'd also think some (perhaps 32 oz) liquid SEVIN insecticide in a non-empty full tank followed by a vigorous drive (I'd pour it down the vent pipe to be sure you got any in there, it will all end up in the black tank.
Personally, I'd do the fogger first.

I have a high powered tank sprayer that I used when I initially flushed it, I am thinking I will follow Daves recommendation with the insectisides and follow it up with another high powered spray and hope it cures the problem. I am going to start with a high level bleach treatment to start. We are done using the coach for the year so I will do the bleach, let it sit for a few weeks, run down to the rest station and empty and flush out.
Will do an insecticide treatment after that with a flush and hopefully they will be gone for good.
I think I am going to net off my holding tank vent also.

You shouldn't ever need to fog your coach here. The cold winters and mild summers keep the bugs down. Virtually no flea or and problems. I wouldn't fog the coach unless you see something other than the flies.

We have brown recluse spiders that are endemic to this part of the country. You don't want to share space with them. Ants too. It's amazing how fast ants can invade a space. We have enough bugs that killing a few 'good ones' isn't a concern to me.

In the west side of Washington state there are no poisonous bugs, snakes, etc. No ticks or chiggers. Only dampwood termites (the kind that infest wood that is already rotting). In 40 years of camping all over this half of the state, most of the time with dogs, we've never had an insect problem in an RV.
We do have red jellyfish that will burn you like acid, an stinging nettles that are almost as bad, so it isn't all fun and games ;o)

one upside to living so far north is fewer crazy bugs. Just mosquitoes and ticks.
Though my cousin did get bit by a brown recluse that came up on a pallet.. not fun!

We have a wood burning stove, we don't bring wood into the house without gloves on. Not because of the Recluse, but of the more common Hobo Spider we have here in NW Washington.
Better safe than bitten.

We do get the occasional hibernating hornet that comes in on some firewood. A few hours in a nice warm house and they wake up. So suddenly in mid December you have a groggy, angry hornet bouncing off the walls.

Kerry,
I got bitten by one last year and thought it was a boil until I had Helen look at the spot and describe it to me. She noted that it
was a read spot with a black center. I knew enough to realize THAT was not a boil so off I went to the local clinic. The doctor took
one look at it and told me what it was. He asked when it happened and I noted I think Thursday, he noted I was lucky to come in
after only a couple of days as a brown recluse bite can develop into something really NASTY!
Having said that we've got a spider Downunder called the Funnel Web Spider, their bite will KILL you!

IIRC, the "black spot" is DEAD flesh and it will enlarge VERY rapidly without treatment!

is there anything down under that does NOT kill you?! I think, Australia
