A couple of weeks ago I decided to try to get my 6K Onan fixed. It ran rough and was leaking oil all over the place. It took about 3 days of just cleaning 37 years of oil, dirt, leaves, etc from the thing. After the cleaning, I replaced the front seal, leaking oil pressure switch, retorqued the bolts on the governor case and the oil filter mount (most were loose), replaced spark plugs, set the points, changed the oil and filter, and fired it up. It ran pretty good, but still missed somewhat.
At the suggestion of Rob Mueller and Chuck Boyd I decided to install Gary Bovee's Electronic Ignition Kit. At the base of this kit is the Pertronix electronics. Gary's kit includes everything you need for installation including easy to follow instructions. I ordered the kit from Applied GMC or you can get it through www.gmcidiotsguide.com which also has a complete set of pictures keyed to the installation procedures.
The installation was done by myself and was very easy. I fired it up and it immediately started almost before I could get my finger off the button. It smoothed out after a few seconds and ran extremely smooth even after loading it with the refrigerator, both roof AC units, and the microwave. I am extremely pleased with the results. Also, if you ever have a problem with it, the original points are still there as backup with the reconnecting of the wire to the coil.
Thanks Gary, for making it easy,
Jerry

On my GMC wish list. Glad to hear it was not a difficult install. I do like that the points remain as a back up.

I went to give the onan a tune up this year. I took one look at adjusting the points, and decided that looked like a pain. Hard to see what i would be doing on those points.
I ordered up the electronic kit from bovee, And with very little time, and the best color picture instructions around. I was done.
I believe it made my onan start better, and it is running real solid after installing the kit. It included everything, and was very easy.
So that is my review.

I doubt it. Hunting is usually a carb / governor issue.

Voltage and frequency are directly related on this generator. Get the voltage correct and the frequency will be OK. I had mine running last night with the AC on for about 20 minutes. The voltage was 123 volts and the frequency was 60 HZ.

I would think the hunting is carb related.
however, pretty much with mine, I thought I had carb issues, but decided to go after the ignition side of how the engine run before I tackle the carb. after installing the bovee kit, I felt pretty good that any ignition problems were licked, and i could concentrate on what was going on with the carb. Just in case both your ignition, and your carb are giving some trouble.
I use the same method on my air cooled VW engines. I first check timing, know the valves are adjusted and clean and adjust the points, prior to messing with the screws on the carbs.
just what I did.

I understand completely Fred. I have a low hours Onan that runs perfectly, but I’m still considering Gary’s kit and wanted to know how difficult the install was.

I recommend that others who have bought the kit and need to replace the document request that of Gary directly.
