For those of you wanting to build your own alignment kit here is an interesting looking combo laser level and angle finder on sale for just $25:

http://www.rockler.com/igaging-9-digital-level-with-laser

I know nothing about this specific unit so can't comment on accuracy or anything else but it is half the price of what I have used in the past and might work well for this application.

Jerry,

It looks almost identical to the Craftsman level/laser I use. But I'm not
entirely clear what it's projecting. First off, the author doesn't know
the difference between "plain" and "plane". And that definition is
essential to understanding what they're promoting. "projects a crosshair
pattern horizontally" doesn't really make any sense at all to me. Seems to
me if it truly projects a crosshair, that would be virtually worthless
unless the two "hairs" are perpendicular to each other, with one of them
parallel to the plane of the level.

I'm probably misunderstanding what they're saying -- and "plain" doesn't
help. :-)

Nor does the reviewer that reports one of the bubbles being miscalibrated.
